Not wishing to be unoriginal - anyone got any ideas for a good track day car? Must be cheap (£1000ish) and preferably RWD or 4WD. Already considering old 3 series' and porsche 924's.

Capri,V6 engine stuff of course.
Alfa saloons, early 90's "twin spark" models - cant remember the type no.
Nissan Silvia Turbo (1st type).
Strip off any surpluss weight, and all three should provide cheap track day fun.

If you are thinking the Porsche route try and get a 924S rather than the regular 924. The S has got the same 2.5 engine as the 944 and its easy and cheap to get over 180bhp which would be quick in a stripped car.

You can get a sorted ex racer 924 from £2-3k but thats over your budget.

Alternatively my buddy just picked up a 325i for £800 325i which seems a sweet car for the money, it is however much much more tail happy than a 924/944 (Porsches have a transaxle) but if you are after tail out fun its got to be the way to go. Budget on decent suspension and new harder compound pads and Im sure it would be a great laugh.

How about shoving an old Rover V8 into something like a Cortina or Escort MkII

Had a ball in my knackered old suzuki swift gti mk1. 750kg,(same as S2 elise ST) 101bhp, ajustable konis, chucked away the rear seats, shoved in a harness, stuck some yokos on the front, total cost= £350. Fun factor 11/10 and with the added bonus that it ran rings around base elises unless they were quite skilled drivers its a win win situation. well except most have rotted away by now
