Interesting... certainly I've always gone for widest tyres I can fit on the rims, but might reconsider. I've squeezed a 245 on an 8 inch rim, perhaps I'd have been better off sticking with the standard (also cheaper) 225.
Alternatively... get some wider aftermarket wheels, but 5x130 fitments seem quite hard to get hold of.

I was looking at rim and tyre sizes used on 996 Cup cars, and noticed something similar.
Looks like best performance is when tread width is roughly equal to rim width.
