Hi all, bit of an unusual one but something that may well appeal.

A night time track day in January, there’s a normal, boring usual daylight one as well but for those with Le Mans or Nurburgring 24 obsessions there is really only one to be involved with.

It’s also in aid of Mission Motorsport, something close to my heart, so have fun, pretend to be McNish and do some good. What’s not to like?

Interesting. Wonder what the briefing will be like... at most 24hr races a minimum amount of night practice is compulsory for all drivers before being able to do night stints.

Also, the most dangerous times in 24hr races were during the night, very hard to judge closing speeds of faster cars and exactly how many cars are in a pack of lights. Situation was hugely helped by intelligent radar systems, but track cars won't have them.

Wonder how a bunch of amateurs who've never been on track at night will fare? Hopefully be alright...

Darren from DN running it, MM running 12 hr race at the same circuit for 10 years?

As I understand it there’s got going to be control of cars out on circuit to set periods.

Seems like it’ll be as safe as it could possibly be.

The night element is sessioned I understand in 30min blocks so each driver gets four blocks. I'd guess the green flag time on each session is fairly close to 20minutes allowing for track clearance before the alternate group.

Interesting idea. My insurer (and independent back up) isn't keen so I'm out unless anyone can suggest an alternative insurance provider?

I'm looking forward to this. It'll certainly be something a bit different!

Where else am I going to drive on track in the pitch black unless I go racing smile

There was a dusting of snow over the weekend when everywhere else was getting dumped on but long gone now and nothing since. Forecast seems to be for 3-4 degrees and getting warmer toward Satuday. Rain/sleet in the morning (so could still be interesting) then drier through the afternoon/evening. Generally it is noticeably warmer than the mainland and doesn't get the 'worst' of the weather though at this time of year who knows! Hardest part will likely be getting there...

I'm going to do the night stint... assuming I get there... it's 5hrs each way...

... at least bringing a suitably equipped car for it...

That was a very well run and enjoyable night.

Sign on, then a 40 minute briefing, this included the chief Marshall and circuit manager which was a good thing imo.

20 minute sessions, 2 groups. Session 1 was 20 minutes behind the pace car that went quicker and quicker each lap. Build up allowed you to realise all the subconscious peripheral markers you use are simply not there.

Group 2 had the same.

Then 20 min sessions as normal, definitely takes a bit of getting used to, without the lightbar it was way way harder. Thing about coming into a fast left in 4th, you look left for the apex and it's pitch black as the headlights are pointing forwards. rofl

I'll definitely do another if they run one, R8 next time, with a lightbar smile

If you follow Mission there’s some footage on various socials.

Did look epic.

Glad people enjoyed it.

Ok - must remember to not have the car in bits in early Jan next year.

Which layout did it run?
