Hi all

Thinking about doing a track day in my ev (ioniq 5n) my local track is brands 20mins away

Has anyone taken an ev on track and how was it for getting it charged near by? Specifically brands ?

Brands Hatch is MSV who seem to have their heads stuck very firmly in the sand as far as EVs go.
i.e. if you want to use leccy, best take some with you!

If you hire a garage and pay their leecy hook up charge, you might be able to connect up with a 16A commando plug and a 'granny(+?) charger', between your track sessions.
Or take a proper car! wink

Get ZapMap if you haven’t already.

Best bet is probably the Tesla supercharger at Sevenoaks, about eight miles and 20 minutes from the circuit.

They’ll be fast and cheaper than most alternatives too.

I don't have an answer to your question but this just reminded me about seeing an Ionic 5N queuing for the sound test at Thruxton the other day and how we chuckled.

Seemed decent on track to be fair.

Not wishing to be the voice of doom, but isn't your car leased via salary sacrifice?

I've only ever tracked my own car that's of a value that I can accept it being written off. What happens if you punt it into a tyre wall, or worse roll it, I presume all insurance would be void as you're not the owner of the car and don't have their consent to take it on track. I've seen plenty of people at track days with number plates covered, presumably for this reason, but that's one hell of a risk on a brand new £65k car where the lessee is presumably your employer.

I think it must be, just had a look at track days website and there aren’t any on there.

Yes you are correct , a massive risk indeed , and as you stated why so many number plates are covered, but driving it on a track for me is safer than pushing it on public roads , but ultimately my decision

Wow, that’s pretty wild risk. There’s a strong chance you’ll be fine and no-one will ever be the wiser.

Having done a number of track days, it often isn’t the drivers fault they get into an accident, more likely the other complete mad men/women around you that lose control/spin which has a knock on effect or a direct impact to you.

Last time at thruxton I saw a Porsche 911 turbo turn up late and get binned within 15mins by the mental MX5 gang who turned up that day - felt so sorry the the guy but it was not his fault, they were racing around him and took each other out, and him.

Is it worth a £65k liability and losing your job for?

If you go for it, fair play, you’ve got balls of steel. Best of luck.

I’d say better to rent a car than risk the downside of an uninsured leased car on a track day.

You could pick tracks that are lower risk, I'd say Bedford is pretty safe, very wide open track, plenty of visibility and not really much to hit, although apparently there's some big ruts in the green stuff so it's best not to go exploring too much.

Blyton Park and Anglesey would also fall into that category.

. . . or just get trackday insurance from someone like Moris. Make sure the cover is for the RRP of the vehicle, pay the premium, and go drive it on track.

I can't say I know what the T&Cs of a SS contract state but from memory on a lease PCP etc the words are along the lines of the vehicle can't be used for racing or time trials. Trackdays do not allow you to time your laps and it certainly isn't a race.

If you make it to one you'll have a riot of a day. Took a ride in a 'ring taxi last month in one and it was great. The driver was getting 3 laps to a charge then went to plug it in for half hour or so.

I cannot speak for all track day insurers, but mine only insure you for 90% of the value of the car, the 10% excess is your risk.
