Noise at Bedford
Discussion
I've heard that the noise limit at Bedford Autodrome is pretty tight (88dB on a 30m "drive by"). Anybody any idea how this compares to a standard static test?
The car will pass 98dB at 0.5m (4000rpm) but I've no idea how this compares with a 30m drive by. Its a rally car so a bit louder than a road car. Anybody had a rally car round Bedford? Its a new car so fancied a trackday as a shakedown.
Cheers!

I think it is actually 87.5 driveby now, you get 2 strikes, then you're out so to speak.
I usually get round it by lifting off, as i go past the microphones, but this becomes very tedious after a while, especially as there are 3 of them.
Take a bung if you can, just in case.

Guys, thanks for the info.
Do they do a static test as well, or just keep the trackside mic's on all the time? The car is a subaru legacy, and will sound like an impreza with a big-bore exhaust, I'd imagine folks run those round there quite regularly?
Thanks!
PS - how much per dB is the going rate for a "bung"

Yep, static on your way in at 98dB 0.5m @ 45 degrees from the exhaust and then one or two listening posts around the circuit.
I have seen quite a few trick Imprezas running at Bedford and don't think you should have too much trouble if you are running cleanly i.e. don't have anti-lag or too much popping and banging on the over-run etc.
You could always try Scoobynet and see if anyone there has more relevant experience.

You REALLY don't want to ask that on there !
Do a search on "the Bedford 28" about multiple bans following a trackday disagreement over noise limits
Oops! Scoobynet seems to have removed the offending thread but I did find some discussion of the fall-out on SIDC. Looks like I could be wrong then.
I took the Griff earlier in the year and registered 102dB on the static test (you should've seen the evil grin on the marshalls face as he saw me approaching! ). They yellow stickered me, which basically marked me out for close attention by the drive by monitors.
Drove all day as quick as I wanted without a second thought for the noise-police. No Problemo.

this summer bedford got worse and worse banning people. first day no probs, second 2 warnings, 3rd a warning and sent home. car the same throughout with 97dB exhaust and always passes static test. still not as bad as brands; got a warning for excessive tyre noise, wtf !!! i despair at these nimbys
I've been banned from Bedford once, only being "allowed" back after apologising for daring to question the decision made by the unquestionable JP. Makes me laugh that cars can get banned for being too noisy, but there's no problem with JP coming and going in his helicopter as he pleases.
I've also been sent home 3 times, in 3 different cars, one modified, 2 standard.
It's a great circuit, but if you think your car is borderline noise wise, don't be too shocked if you get sent home.
FYI, all 3 cars passed static test without issue.

better still is the (apologetic) marshal at donnington having to shout my warning over the noise of a freight jet landing at east midlands.

I believe there's a troublesome resident in Thurleigh village who complains at every opportunity. She should think herself lucky, given that TNT Skypak were going to operate Thurleigh as an air freight terminal and already had permission for some ludicrous number of aircraft movements each year (6000? I forget). Hell, JP's operation is (much!) quieter than the MoD research airfield that was there before - JP doesn't operate Tornados "nap of the Earth" at 2am, or A10 Warthogs and Chinooks doing circuits on Sunday afternoons, like the MoD did. Of course, there was nothing you could do about the MoD, since they would simply deny everything.

Not quite true.
What, about the MoD? I'm afraid it is. The CAA gave me the number of the MoD complaints line but said "I wouldn't waste your time calling it, though." And he was right; the standard MoD response is "We have no aircraft operating in that area at this time." Oh, so I imagined those Tornados, did I? And if they were 500ft up, I'm Lynford Christie.
Anyhow, academic for Thurleigh, since it's no longer an airfield.
get a bung from sumopower or apex performance, only about £30 and makes a big difference, held in by one bolt or self tapper.
Our Nissan 200 failed bedfords static test by a fair bit but was ok when tested for drive by (with their own driver). Have since bought a bung which works well for quiet track days, and does not affect the power.
