I've got a car where the handbrake automatically applies when I turn it off, which is fine in normal life, but I'm worried that if I used it after stopping on track I'd get problems with the brakes shoes cooking and sticking to the disc.
Is there any way to get round this? Apart from a long cool off lap and doing circles of the pitlane until everything is back to normal temperatures.

Pull the fuse?
You could be right. I might have to do some experiments to see if there is a way to stop the car automatically applying the handbrake when I turn it off.

thats a really good point... you are quite right, everything i've ever read on taking a car on track specifically says don't put the handbrake on when you come into the pits, but what do you do if the car you have does it automatically?

what car is it? might be info on it on a forum from other people who track the same car. but yeah, with no other knowledge i'd either be trying to code it out of the software, or disabling the hardware by pulling a fuse...

It's a 308 gti, there aren't many around.
At the risk of answering my own question a bit of googling suggests it can be done without pulling fuses. The important part is to make sure the handbrake doesn't go on automatically.

I don't know, but my initial thought would be that pulling the fuse would leave the brakes on.

Hopefully this applies to the GTi:

Deactivating automatic
operation
In some situations, for example when it is
extremely cold or during towing (caravan,
breakdown), it may be necessary to deactivate
automatic operation of the system.
  • Start the engine.
  • Apply the parking brake with the control
lever, if it is released.
  • Take your foot off the brake pedal.
  • Push and hold the control lever in the
release direction for at least 10 seconds and
no more than 15 seconds.
  • Release the control lever.
  • Press and hold the brake pedal.
  • Pull the control lever in the apply direction
for 2 seconds.
Deactivation of the automatic functions
is confirmed by illumination of this
indicator lamp in the instrument panel.
  • Release the control lever and the brake pedal.
From now on, the parking brake can only
be applied and released manually using the
control lever.
Repeat this procedure to reactivate automatic
operation.
Reactivation of automatic operation is
confirmed by the indicator lamp in the
instrument panel going off.
