GoPro Hero10 trackday settings?
Discussion
Hi all
Think this is probably the right place to post (rather than photography and video). I picked up a GoPro Hero10 Black last week, the first action cam I've owned, mostly to record trackday footage. It's mounted centrally on a harness bar between the seats using a Manfrotto Superclamp.
Issue I had at Bedford (only discovered post-trackday unfortunately) is that the camera "pans" left and right under cornering g-forces, so the centre of the windscreen is out of frame and the corner's apex (that I've undoubtedly missed ) is totally out of shot. It pans right on left hand bends, and vice versa. Bit of online research shows it's a quirk of the image stabilisation of the GoPro, but I can't find anything in particularly about the Hero10. I'd like to keep the stabilisation on ideally - it's one of the main reasons I got the GoPro as the car (Exige) is not exactly plush-riding.
I was running the camera lens in "linear" mode to try and give a narrower angle, which may be the problem, although I can see it was still panning a little in wider mode at road speeds, now I know what I'm looking for. Anyone have any thoughts or experienced this issue? What settings do you run on the GoPro to get good footage with the whole windscreen "in frame" at once?
Cheers

turn down or turn off the image stabilisation. if the camera is correctly mounted, it shouldn't be shaking around anyway. a roll bar by definition is incredibly stiff.
Yep it is but camera is shaking around with the car. The image stabilisation (as I understand it at least) isn't about correcting for movement in the mount that is different from the movement of the car, it's about smooth and clear footage in a bumpy environment. Hi Neal,
I also have an Exige, and I hated the panning effect with the stabilisation on.
I now just keep Hypersmooth off, and although there is a bit of bounce it's not too bad in my opinion. You could even argue that it helps a bit with the sense of speed.
I also use 'Narrow' field of view. With the camera mounted between the seats, it pretty much perfectly covers the width of the windscreen (mine is also mounted on the harness bar with a clamp).
The other setting I use is -1.5 on EV Comp. The stops the issue of the cockpit being correctly exposed, and the outside view being completely washed out.
Here's an example of how it looks with those settings, a video from my first time at Silverstone last year: https://youtu.be/wr6M90ObIg8?si=Taqo3lTZgRGzKymS&a...

Thanks, that's really helpful (and your Exige sounds superb too - my S2 can't compare!) I also have an Exige, and I hated the panning effect with the stabilisation on.
