Hi all,

I own an r34 which is extremely load as it has screamer pipe and do think it breaks most limits around 110 or more drive by.

what tracks in uk have unsilenced days ?

110dB drive by will break just about all limits. Most tracks are nowhere near that and are probable around 95dB.

Even the Donington unsilenced days are in reality 108dB

Anglesey and goodwood do the odd unrestricted day. Not cheap though!

I don't recall anyone ever being noise tested at Anglesey?
Ditto Pembrey.

I am not sure if it 110db drive by however know it is really loud, straight pipe and screamer when on boost. How would you measure it without paying for track day and potentially being asked to leave?

Some sort of noise testing equipment.

I downloaded 2 free apps to my phone, which both produced the same result as the test at Brands.

Turn up at your local track day and explain your concerns & they will do a static test there & then, just make sure you have a chat with the testers & they will get those on the day through first & then do yours.

They can only do a static test & that will give you a good indication of whether it will pass a drive by test.

The only way to do a drive by is to do a track day, however if you pass the static, the likelihood is if you do trip a drive by they will first bring you in & tell you, you can then find out where the tester is & just do a short-shift for that one small straight.

I’d be VERY surprised if you were more than 110dB drive by. Your best bet is to turn up at the track ahead of time and ask them to do a static test (1m away at 46 degrees off axis)

If you pass that you’ll very likely be ok, even if you have to short shift by the noise posts.

My car is 102dB static but can scrape through a 87.5 dB drive by

Buy a cheap noise tester off ebay, 10-20 quid from memory. Phone apps don't deal well with very loud noises because the microphones are not designed for it. My ebay tester has always been within 1dB of the professional track day ones, and VOSA's (as was) for that matter.

Why would your car need to remain so loud? Mufflers are a thing? Probably wouldn’t take much to get down to 105dB static which would open up a lot more trackday options.

Id start with a local track to do a static test, then youll have an actual starting point for volume rather than guessing. I used to have a straight piped, decatted turbo v6 300zx which i thought was pretty loud - tested at 99db static, so actually, would have been ok at most tracks.

But then if you do want to take a car on track, then sort the silencing out. Same as fitting decent brakes and tyres, a track car needs to be quiet enough to not have noise issues. Excessively loud cars is probably the biggest threat to the continuation of track days as a hobby, and loud cars are rarely neccessary, given that trackdays arent a race and therefore arent chasing the highest possible bhp figures.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

What this man said. Who needs a car that loud!

Even my 5.5 TVR could scrape through 105. That was with a standard exhaust but with tubular headers.
I ran most TDs with a set of cans on just to be sociable and sensible for reasons above.
