Ive just turned 21 and my lovely girlfriend has bought me a track experience thing at mallory.

Having no track experience at all I am really looking forward to it, hoping i'll learn a lot.

Just wondering if anyone has been on this day, and has any tips/ whatever.

Only tell me good things tho, it would be cruel to curb my enthusiam!

As far as i'm aware, the day includes karting, a "hot hatch", formula ford 1.6, formula vauxhall 2.0 and caterham super sevens.

Anyone know where i can get tips for the circuit (so i look like a god??) and that kind of thing?

Thanks!

The only tip i have for Mallory is , just before the pits its like a slight down hill , slight left hand , if its wet be carefull as water streams across the track , even if the rest of the track is dry .

its not nice, i spun a F3000 there

People moan that Mallory is a "circuit with only one corner", but it's a good circuit to cut your teeth on. In a mini it's good fun, although I was flat out for most of the lap . Watch out for the camber changes at the hairpin and through the Devil's Elbow.

Happy Birthday! (Whenever it was)

I did Mallory earlier this year - for about 30 mins, until my car broke down (well I got black flagged actually as it was making so much bloomin' noise)

...anyway... If you would like to see an 'in car' lap, I've posted one so you can get to know the circuit before you arrive. It's squashed to hell for a fast d/load (1.7 mb Windows Media Video).

It's also not a particularly quick lap (about a minute or so) - as I didn't/don't know the circuit well enough to fly, but my lines arn't *too* bad for a tin top (don't shout people). God knows what line you should take for the hairpin, I wasn't there long enough to find out).

By the way... the 'peep' you hear is the car telling me I'm doing 100 mph, so even though it looks like a stroll, I promise I'm not towing a caravan.

here's the link (right click and 'save target as')

Have fun out there, and hope to see you on many more track days

Is this the "Tangerine" thing ?

Trefor and I did this track day thing with Tangerine (mk2 Golf GTi's, 1600 Formula Ford, 2000 Vauxhall Lotus, Caterhams) earlier this year. Good fun. If you've never been on track before (like us) then Mallory is a great circuit.

The day was pretty good, came away with a good buzz anyway :-) The Formular Fords were okay, and the 2.0 car was mightily impressive, but the biggest fun of the day was, believe it or not, the Caterhams !! In fact I had such a blast in them that I've gone out and bought a Westfield for the purpose of going on track days !! What helped was that when in the Caterhams, you had an instructor with you, who obviously knew the course and the cars .... mine was an absolute NUTTER and had me going round the course way way faster than nerves / inexperience would normally allow after just a few laps. Coz it's a small track, the Caterhams wipe the floor with just about everything there.

On the down side, you didn't get many laps in any of the cars (about 5 in each, which on Mallory (small) isn't much bum-on-seat time) plus you were on track with other Tangerine events (classic cars, super cars) so it got rather busy at times.

Enjoy ! But beware, it's starts you on the slippery slope ! (I know ... "Hello, my name is Neville, and I have a problem ...." )

Thanks very much guys, ive got to admit the excitment is killing me!

Do you think it would make much difference to an extreme novice like myself if my first time out was in the wet?

sorry... I mean Yep *big time*. Take everything VERY slow and build up very gradually in the wet.

I put a page together for track day first timers - most of it relates to the car, but there may well be some helpful stuff here >> www.stevecarter.com/track-day-beginners.htm

Hi Ya,
After the hairpin get back over to the right of the track ASAP - this will allow you to get onto the straight in the best shape - it will also let you get the throttle open sooner.
It's a great little track - enjoy.
Cheers

Seen quite a few spins/crashes there for exactly that reason. You can also get mud and other residue from the water on dry days. Worth looking on the sighting lap and/or not getting too close.

Happy b'day flibbles! I got a similar thing from my missus for my birthday: Supercar experience or something like that. Basically your assesed in a Golf GTi then let loose in Elise/Mas 3200GT/XKR/Noble/Viper/Diablo. I'm a week Saturday. Can't wait! Anyone done this one then? Is it all its cracked up to be?
