Can anyone recommend an easy to set up timing/video device for in car footage etc ?

I keep seeing great footage with overlays etc and whilst not all about times it is good to see progression and have a record etc

Not wanting a complex set up or anything I have to do too much editing or messing about with !

Thanks in advance

Not got one myself (yet) but had a passenger ride with a guy using a Garmin Catalyst and it looked amazing - does exactly what you want plus a million other cool things.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s proper money - but I was seriously impressed. Good YouTube reviews too.

Harrys Laptimer (ios or android) + Go Pro seems to be a popular and fairly cheap solution.

Even cheaper if you're happy to mount your phone in a position to capture the video itself - might get warm though...and some TDOs/tracks require tethers to stop them flying around the cabin in an accident.

I use TrackAddict app on android smartphone, connected via bluetooth to an ELM unit in the OBD-2 port.

Phone records video, sound, G forces & GPS position etc. ELM provides throttle pedal %, brake % etc.

The Catalyst doesn't have any external inputs afaik so you won't get revs, throttle position etc...

Most trackdays in the UK won't allow visible timing either so if they spot it you'll be asked to remove it, not sure if it has a option to tether either.

If you're spending Catalyst money then an Android phone + GPS receiver + OBD2 connection with Harry's Laptimer would probably be the most complete solution, although requires faff from a user perspective.

I have one. Used it for first time yesterday after buying from RPM Technik. Amazing bit of kit.
