I don't see why a hot day would cause cancellation of the day unless the tarmac starts melting

Was waiting for responses like this...

It's not just "a hot day" is it. It's likely to be the hottest day ever in the UK.

It sounds like you personally want it cancelled, why not just don’t go if it worries you so much?

Its not going to a huge amount of fun I dont think, and it certainly wont do the car any real favours, unless you do very short runs.

Heat soak will be an issue as well Id imagine.

Got to be a first for the UK , worrying about your track day being to HOT......

I was at the Nurburgring on Monday and Tuesday, Spa on Wednesday and Zolder on Thursday.

It was extremely hot.

My car has sufficient cooling and I just took plenty breaks and kept myself hydrated. If I was too hot I waited a while before driving again.

Its not rocket science.

Not one of those places was above 30 degrees on those days. So more than 10 degrees less than Bedford will be...

Not what I was asking was it? Obviously if I don't want to go, I won't go. No one is forcing me.

If you havent heard anything I'd assume its happening but surely better to ask them directly...wouldn't put me off for what it's worth...you said it's an evening session so temperatures will be cooler than midday.

What exactly are you concerned about? They run events in countries all around the world with high ambient temperatures.

It's not as if the staff will turn up on the day and say "well I wish I hadn't worn my wooly jumper today"

I'm going, my car has sealed windows, no air con or even blowers, its black and all I have for ventilation is a roof scoop. its going to be hot and uncomfortable but do shorter runs and stay hydrated.

What car are you running? air con?

Absolutely brutal, some terrible driving as well, I can only guess people with air con fiddling with the settings mid-corner...

I don't ever want to do a day like that again, the grip was incredible on the slicks, brakes felt amazing, the whole car just felt dialled in, but after about 5-6 laps I had to come in for the coolant to drop. towing home in the truck with the air con on was a major luxury!

Highlight of my day was seeing an RS500 and an Escort Cosworth being used and abused fully - kudos to them, cars are meant to be driven

I went to Silverstone today, unbearable heat, god knows how people manage it without air con! Track closed early due to the heat melting the tarmac too ha.

I was there in the silver Corvette, didn't witness any terrible driving? Unless it was me lol

Makes me laugh how many people asked me that week if it would be cancelled. Why? I used to track the Vette at Pahrump in Nevada in 50C ambients.

Admittedly Monday was a little unpleasant at times but that was mainly because my blower motor packed up recently - timing!

My two boys raced karts for an hour tonight at Rye-house in unprecedented temperatures for the UK, all was well!!

I was also there on Monday, I had a couple of divebombs into the hairpins but I saw them coming so it's all good. It was seriously hot and I'm amazed there were so few stoppages (only 1 red flag that I saw) considering the increased pressure that all the cars would've been under. Luckily didn't have any issues with my car, managed 200 miles on track. Good fun nonetheless, the track seemed quite quiet at times, it looked like plenty of people were in the pit lane keeping out of the heat!

I was at Silverstone yesterday (Tuesday) in my e46 M3 track car, I have no aircon, no fans and only one little slider in my driver's window that opens. It was unbearably hot. Apologies for the red flag, my car got so hot that it boiled the fuel and cut out redcard

Silverstone definitely shouldn't have let the day go ahead. They told us in the briefing at 8.40am (when it was already 29 deg) that IF it goes above 30deg they will stop the track every hour to do a track inspection to check for melting tarmac, because the day before the tarmac had started to lift in the heat. They then stopped the day at 3pm because surprise surprise, the tarmac had started to melt.

To be fair the main culprits were a red civic and a silver TT who seemed to be having a bit of a race with each other at every possible opportunity.

The main issue I have on track days is awareness for letting people through, if I know a car is faster I slow down to let them pass easier, I also always check my mirrors when I’m on a cool lap, either accelerating to be through a corner before a car comes through or massively slowing between corners that are safe so they aren’t disrupted before the next corner, I always indicate my intention and manage the gap so people know what’s happening well in advance. But a lot of, I guess novice drivers, panic when a fast car approaches and get out the way mid corner, which you aren’t meant to do, so I hang back till it’s clear to pass, but then they keep slowing and you end up with a train.

Worse still, you are behind someone for half a lap, clearly faster and going at about 50% of your pace, get to a straight and pull out to pass, then they hammer the throttle to match you on the straight and brake test you into the corner. I’ve backed off before to create a gap again but end up catching them for the same to happen again. It’s so frustrating when you are in a car that’s fast in corners and underpowered on the straights.

I had an instance of this with the aforementioned silver TT before the chicane on the back straight, I passed the red civic on the straight and then the silver TT and was about to move onto line for the corner and he brake tested me, I ended up going through the corner ahead on a sub optimal line because I couldn’t slow and slot in behind because the red civic parked itself up the arse of the TT so there was literally no room. It wasn’t an issue car wise for me, but it’s unnecessary risk that could have been averted with some consideration.

It’s a track day, not a race, there are no prizes on offer
