Whilst there is a 7m 18s record to beat with a car on road tyres actually this will be a formality given the speed of the new car..

However there are two other benchmarks that I'm aiming for.

1. The fastest passenger lap
2. The fastest lap recorded on video - which I believe is currently the Bell 956 lap, 6m 40s

So I am creating Projekt 6 minuten from which the passenger will be selected.

Anyone interested in being part of this danger get in touch via the usual email address. phil@philbennett.com

'brave' words - best of luck - you're setting yourself up for a fall if:
a) the projekt never gets there
b) you're not as fast as you think
When will it happen?

To go 6-minute fast - you'll need good road tyres - is there a road tyres that would allow you to go that quick?

Joe,

I expect Phil means a 6:59 and then working down to less than 6:40...

What about the CSL's michelin cups or Yokohama A032 or A048? Toyo R888?

What are the best 'road legal' tyres for the 'ring in anyone opinion?

Is that the lap he does on the 'In-Car 956 experience'??? Last time I looked at it he was overtaken by Jacky Ickx halfway round the circuit, surely that must have been a quicker lap. No video though I presume.

Don't forget though, the fabled 6m 15s that Bellof reputedly did!!!

Bellof's reputed practice lap was 6:11.

So "Projekt Unter 7 Minuten" then?

Of the standard "track day tyres" I think the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups stand out as the best that I've tried and/or heard about. I guess there are some other more extreme tyres out there.

Oh dear, I can't believe this has caused issues already!!

OK Projekt 6 minuten was a simple reference to the fact that the lap time will start with a 6. It is also a pretty naff title but it came up in a conversation with a mate and it stuck.

For all the doubters over viability I think am as credible a candidate to do the time as any, and the "brave" words come given I known how quick the car was that I lapped in 7m 19s and this one is more powerful, lighter, with more aero and on better tyres. So something is wrong if it can't go a second quicker.

The 6m 40s lap attempt will of course - for those that haven't guessed - be on slicks.

Then again maybe I'll suck and struggle to beat 8 minutes..

Out of curiosity - what do you think is the absolute limit for current road-legal tyres (in terms of a lap time)? Or maybe you don't feel it is a limiting factor (I guess you do or you wouldn't be looking to do the really quick laps on slicks).
Are there any details of this "uber-car" yet available?

Is this the line you're talking about Angus?

PS Phil, I'm behind you! You'll do 6:xx without a problem so the original title seems good to me!

I think it depends on the car - the big reason cars like the Radical SR3, etc were not given a warm welcome from the Germans is that they are able to use a road tyre better because they only weigh 500-600kgs where as a 996 is over 1200kgs.

I think when I did my 7m 19s Radical used a Dunlop D98J tyre which was not too bad and looking at pictures of the Donkey that did 7m 18s that too used a Dunlop tyre but the newer pattern - not sure about construction or compound.

No doubt about it a pure racing slick will offer a big advantage because of the greater choice of construction and compounds.

Ultimate time on track day type tyres is really the times we see now - I'm expecting the new car to dip into the high 6m 50s. The talk when I did 7m 19s was that a sub 7m lap would be really easy but that comes from people who haven't lapped close to these times. I can promise you that finding 20seconds from a time that was already pretty near the limit will be tough - but I think possible.

Can't tell you about the car yet - other than it has nearly 1000bhp/tonne. Nice..

It was a Dunlop Formula R.

Phil,

Would it be a V8 Radical by any chance: calling it a double-busa perhaps?
There is a new GSX1300R coming out soon with a new engine too. That will sort the 6:30 attempt next year.
