This is the current state of the rear offside after the last track day at Abingdon….not a circuit to try if you’re attempting to preserve rubber hehe

Booked into Anglesey soon…any thoughts… scratchchin

Abingdon is ex runway surface and is very abrasive.

Anglesey is much the same, I think they mixed sea shells in with the surface, it’s very grippy too.

I melted a section of tread from some Dunlop direzzas that had only done a couple of track days when I was there last summer.

Great circuit and worth the drive though!

That doesnt look excessive to me tbh.... Yoko AD08 ?

Ive not had any tyre issues from Abingdon personally.

Brand new Yoko A048 at Brunters after one track day on my Fury9R....

What pressure did your tyres get to? Looks like overheating has caused the rubber to break off

Anglesey is hard on tyres also. I’ve been there twice the last six weeks. Much more noticeable than Dinington and Oulton. What hot pressures you running at?

R888s a 1700kg e34 M5 and one extremely fun, dry day at Donington resulted in this...

Always arrived/departed on a road tyre though - as I could fit a set of 4 across the rear seats - with waterproof a dog cover to protect the alcantara.

That's expected. The OPs first picture is consistent with incorrect pressures and over heating.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, AD08 all round.

Not had this problem before and it was a hard day on the tyres with lots of quick changes in direction.

Pressures were probably about 21 ish cold, so perhaps a tad high?

At least they were still holding air.

Had a similar outcome with a set of part-worn from the Porsche Cup series (P-Zero C or Corsa) but at Elvington, and was told there were sparks flying off the tyres just after 1pm. Then found out they weren't holding air very well and switched to my road tyres which looked worse for wear after about 15 minutes of sliding on the abrasive surface...so went home whilst I was still able to legally.

The Z4MC is much easier on tyres/fuel/maintenance than the M5 was, and is fun...just a different type of fun...and I tend to only do Oulton Park, Cadwell and the 'Ring now.

I finished off a set of R888s at Blyton (another ex-airfield) with tread at the end like that. I have to say that the fast, swooping, corners at the end of the lap were hysterical fun with little or no tread left, sliding elegantly across the track, but the sharp left handers on the first half were a bit more of a problem

eek Was that par for the course with regard to kerbweight? Must admit memories of driving my dad's old 3.8 5speeder it never felt 1 3/4 tonnes on the road through direction changes etc.

The early 3.6 e34 5-speed was 1670kg, and the later 3.8 e34 6-speed was 1750kg.

Once you add in 90L of fuel, and a 100kg driver, probably closer to 2 tonnes wink

But it never felt that heavy due to the relatively light steering (unless you had the servotronic option which was speed sensitive).

Hell of a lot of body roll though, which helped it grip in all road/track conditions - where the M5 would absorb bumps the Z4MC will skip across them.

My thoughts ? You are not trying hard enough.

My thoughts? AD08s are not really a dry weather track day tyre, more a mixed conditions tyre.
The 8mm tread depth is the biggest giveaway. Remember the comments about F1 cars on full wets or intermediates when the rain stops? They trash the tyres in about 15 miles.

For best performance on a dry track day you want (a light weight car and) something like Toyo R888r (there are others), ie a road legal track slick. It will start with 5mm of tread not 8mm, and have just enough cuts to be legal. The lighter the car the more track days you will get per set. You do get a compound choice, so go for a harder compound if you have both a heavier car and a lighter wallet.

I've got AD08's with exactly the same wear pattern on the rear on my clio 172. I intentionally keep the rears at a slightly higher pressure (36 psi when hot) as the back end of the clio is so light it's hard to get any heat into the rear tyres. The rear brakes don't do much, so there isn't much radiated heat from them. So looking at these pictures i'd guess that the hot temperature of these was on the high side.

As a side note, the rears on mine are 245/35/18 from factory but struggling to find decent track orientated tyres in that size, seems a few 235/35/18 or 245/40/18 would this change in size have any noticeable effect?
