New tyres required for my Skoda...
Discussion
Coming to the end of the tyre life of my Federal RS595s.
I have had 6 TD's so far including one airfield day at Keevil that almost killed the fronts!
Looking for something better. Always ran R888's before on my TVR's and have a set for my Boxster which are fantastic in my opinion.
Skoda in a budget TD car I suppose but is actually very good for what it is. 244bhp, 309 torque, LSD and the usual handling mods. Car is also used occasionally on the road.
I'm thinking that there may be tyres that are more suited to front wheel drive cars. Also like most people, want reasonable vfm.
I know I'm probably opening up a can of worms but look forward to experiences and suggestions.

I don't think you would get 6 Trackday's with R888R on a fairly heavy car like the Skoda and remain road legal but they are a fair bit ahead of RSR in terms of outright perfomance in both wet and dry conditions, they're at least 50% more expensive too.
If budget wasn't really an issue it would be DZ03G or A052 I'd suggest.
Otherwise the AD08RS aren't as good as the RSR on track from personal experience, the Nankang NS2-R are similar to AD08RS, maybe have a little more on track performance. The 'blue earth' technology in the AD08RS really shows when compared to the old AD08R, Just not as much adhesion and more tyre squeal.
Nankang AR1 would be fairly similar to R888R in terms of wear rates/cost/performance.
After using RSR I wouldn't bother with UHP tyres like Michelin etc...I think you'll be disappointed.
Maybe look in to RSR Pro or NS2-R if you really fancy a change but want to keep it below £100/tyre, R888R could be a shout like you say or go all out on DZ03G or A052. Minefield isn't it haha.

Is that a Chinese tyre?
The one thing that I’ve been thinking is that whenever tyre I pick it must be half reasonable in the wet as I would like to continue doing track days during the winter. Winter doesn’t guarantee that it’s going to be wet but an all-rounder that isn’t the best at lap times would be a sensible choice.
By all-rounder I don’t mean not very good in the dry but something with a leaning to being usable in the wet.

Pick up a set of ex clio slicks for peanuts, like £150 on eBay, 215/615/17 they will serve you well and give you tons of grip in the dry.Means investing in another cheap set of wheels but the grip they give you is huge.
For wets/road use run uniroyal Rainsports, again cheap and plenty available
This guy sells loads normally: https://ebay.co.uk/usr/paultwin82

MRF for dry days. Replaced my R888r with a set and in a different league with regards to feedback and grip. Reasonably priced for the performance and apparently they last well too.
I've just fitted a set of Accelera 651s to my spare wheels. Why? I've done nearly 20 trackdays over past few years. Only two of them have been pissing wet all day. About 4 or 5 of them dry all day. The rest, it's either been in pissing down part of the day or on the drive there or on the drive home. When the track dries it destroys road tyres. I figure the 651s will be better than a decent road tyre in all conditions except where there's standing water. Which is rare. And even then, they should at least be 'okay'. So time will tell.

Unfortunately most TDOs state that they only allow you to run on slicks if you have full rollover protection as in a cage.I have never been stopped, nor asked what I was running, and my car only has a roll hoop behind my head, and no roof.

though that said, accelera 651 sports are probably an equal to federal 595 RSRs, or Nankang NS2Rs. if you want something 'better' then they'll cost you, and be very compromised for any wet weather performance.
Had a look at these on the web . Decided as I am going to do winter track days as well as the usual summer days, I need more than a semi slick tyre. I know it won’t give maximum grip but it is all about fun isn’t it?I have ordered a set of the above and thought at £340 for a set of four delivered, I will give it a punt.
Thanks guys for all your input, all very useful as I will be changing my tyres no doubt next year again and may well need a change of make!
Keep it Sunnyside up!
