Got a Go pro with an external mic adapter and it is a POS. Mic is hardly ever detected etc.

Thinking of ditching the whole thing and going for something else.

AUX input ideally.

Any suggestions?

Which GoPro are you using and take it it's the official mic mod box thing?

Use mine with a black 7 and it always works so I'd say yours is either faulty or something else is amiss.....You do have to wait for a minute or so once you've turned it on before you press record, if you turn it on and press record straight away I've heard it can cause problems.

I am - cheap amazon action cam and usual 2.5mm jack mic for a tenner, works perfectly.

I use a Hero 4 Black, official go pro USB to 3.5 adapter and a ANDYCINE AC-M1 (search on amazon) along with a long adapter (lookup TRS and TRRS or whatever the cable acronyms are - phone vs. camera wiring).

Works perfectly. Use the wookie fluff mic cover and it stops all wind noise.

Similar here, both hero black 3+ hooked up to the official gopro mic adaptor and an extension cable the a cheap mix with a wind guard, works well imo

I've tried external mics but they just pick up too much background noise. My car is quite noisy inside though

Thanks for the input chaps. Wasn't aware of the media box. I've upgraded the go pro to a 9 and got the box so we'll see how that works out!

For my last track day I fitted an external mic (Olympus ME-51S) to my GoPro Hero4 Black. It had a fluffy cover on, but I also attached it to the rear number plate area so it was out of wind noise as much as possible.

It definitely made an improvement on exhaust noise sound compared to the standard GoPro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEWrzgwOFHs

All I ever hear on YouTube is people moaning about the GoPro proprietary mic adapters. Expensive. st. Break.

Presumably having the external mic setup means the camera is running exclusively from a battery?

I want to get an external mic too but I need the camera to be wired into the car,.cant be swapping batteries every session where it is.

Shame Gopro did not have a dedicated jack output or sell a miniUSB port replicator. Cant find anything of the kind.

Yes, that is the downside. Battery power only. I’ve got a couple of spare batteries so I just swapped them out during the course of the day. It’s really easy to get the camera on my rear mounting arrangement so it wasn’t an issue for me.

Let’s see how this goes. The mini magic arm thing is pretty great. One thumb screw and it’s out of the way if I want to take a passenger out and back in easy without having to recompose the shot. Not sure on mic location need to have a play but the cars in bits again!
