Lydden Hill TD today.
Discussion
Each to one's own. I prefer tracks such as Combe, Snetterton, Brands, Bedford and Rockingham. More open and yes more controlled.
If I wanted such close haphazard driving, I'd take up banger racing
Yesterday, standards were so bad on the first session that we were all recalled for another briefing!

That was an experience.
Overtaking both sides, in braking zones and in corners!
A bit of an experience if used to the usual format…….
Any other tracks like that? If so I will avoid them.
Of all the tracks I’ve been to, Lydden Hill was by far the farthest into the “this is mental” territory. It all seemed rather dangerous. A car rolled right in front of me – coming out of the first corner.Overtaking both sides, in braking zones and in corners!

I too prefer Bedford, Snetterton, Silverstone etc.
At the time I was very grateful I took an experienced friend’s advice and took my old MX-5, and not the brand new GTS 4.0 to LH. In any case, I won’t be going back.

Never been to the circuit, however aside from its voracious appetite for tyres, i'd also heard word of the trackdays there being described as anything from a 'free for all' to 'a clusterfk', so presumed what you described would have been usual fare? Is this not the case?Overtaking both sides, in braking zones and in corners!

I like it at Lydden. A proper Marshalled free for all. Not for the faint hearted. But as close to racing as you can get on a track day. I have had some epic battles down there.
It is harsh on tyres.
Conversely. I also enjoy the standard track day format at other tracks. Overtaking on the left only.
I often alternate between Lydden and Donnington for two totally different track experiences.

Castle Combe and Snetterton are probably my favourites. Cadwell Park as well but I only do that once a year as a TVR club arranged TD as it is 220 miles away!
I have always used my TVR's before and these suited the tivs perfectly. Lucky I was in an old vRS yesterday so somewhat disposable by comparison........
I understand that some people like Lydden, fair do's but I shall avoid and stick to more open tracks with stricter control as I do this for fun, not running some sort of masochistic gauntlet.

I've been trackdaying at Lydden for years - I love the format they use there. Best described as "big boys rules" I think - overtaking anywhere (with consent). To be fair to them, the track is tiny and you'd struggle to do anything else, if overtaking was only allowed on the left on the straights you'd just get a monster traffic jam.
Opinions of the format vary wildly - as said I love it, but I always make sure I'm in the "experienced" group, where the track discipline is generally excellent. From what I've seen, the beginner and intermediate groups are more prone to having a group of lads turn up and behave like it's a race meeting. The clerk of the course (shame the old guy who worked there for years has now retired, he took no st from anyone!) is generally very quick on cracking down on idiots though.

Yes agree with all of the above, it works really well, which I think is down to the people i the experienced group knowing what they are doing. I have stood and watched the other 2 groups and it did not look too bad however can see how for someone not familiar with this set of rules not feeling comfortable. I was supposed to be there on Monday driving but work got in the way, shame as its such good value and a great little track like a mini Brands indy only more fun.
Exactly.
I had that happen dozens of times when lining up for a corner, partially committed to that line, look down your inside and there is a car taking the inside line. You could not drive without looking left and right at the approach to every bend which you don’t have to do on a normal track day.
If people are happy with that then all well and good but I will avoid any venues if I can that allow this.

I will take the line there when it is emptish but often I will be off it looking for a way past in bends wherever.
(I am usually in one of the quicker cars there)
You need your wits about you.
You need to be an experienced driver
You need to spot the one or two out there early on who are a bit of a liability.
Most know what they are doing and respect if you have your front wing ahead of them you have priority.
I never take anything for granted there and often have a tiny bit left in reserve incase someone is about to pull into me. I plan for the worst.
The experienced group or often the intermediate group are fine. The novice group.....well admittedly that's usually all over the place.
I find driving at other trackdays easier after the intensity of a Lydden free for all.
I love driving at Lydden. But I admit it is a bit marmite. You're either going to love it or never ever want to return.

To add. To my knowledge it is only Lydden that has this let's say more relaxed format. So everywhere else should suit you. I see your point and respect that. Maybe I will give it another go Sunday with a more relaxed attitude.
Hats off to the guy in the Targa S! I wouldn’t want to throw that around that particular track although, he seemed to love it and wasn’t hanging around!
Looking forward to doing the TVR club track day next month at Cadwell Park. I will be doing it in my Porsche and I fully expect us to at least shake hands before overtaking on the correct side!

There is some quite expensive kit that turns up at Lydden. The one that really made me wince was the Maclaren that was properly smashed up coming out of Devils elbow.Hats off to the guy in the Targa S! Yes. Lydden rules at Caldwell, not sure that would work too well! Hope you have a great day.
(I do enjoy overtaking on the left...honestly)
