Booked in for a track day in a few weeks and keen to get some video footage … I have seen some with lap times etc on … any suggestions of a decent set up ? I don’t want to spend loads as likely 5 or 6 days a year … all for my own personal momento of the day …

Thanks

Get a used Go Pro from eBay - I got a Hero2 in 2019 (was my preference as that has a dedicated port for external microphones, not just a USB where you need an adapter) with some spare batteries and a load of accessories (including the screen so you can see what you're shooting, useful to work out the position of your mount I found) for about £55. It's been really good, obviously not up to today's standards of 4K etc (I don't own any 4K TVs or anything) but much better than buying a new chinese Go Pro copy for similar money as I paid for mine.

Iv also just been looking at the Harry’s lap timer petrolhead, it shows video on there is that being recorded off your phone camera? So will need a iPhone camera mount on the windscreen somewhere?

Yes, the video has to come from somewhere.

That can be the iPhone, or a action cam. The website lists the supported models.

https://www.gps-laptimer.de

I have used an iPhone in the past, but the weight of it causes some issues with bouncy footage - and some tracks won't allow phones as cameras.

The benefit of using the phone camera is the data is overlaid immediately - whereas the external camera option requires a bit of work afterwards, and sometimes messes up (you can manually re-sync the data to the video later).

Also remember the amount of space HD/4K 30/60/120fps - video will take up on your phone - either when recording directly on the phone, or copying the action cam video over to do the overlays - you will be using about 200MB per minute for 1080p/60 to 800MB per minute for 4K/60. So a 20 minute 1080p session could take up 4GB of your phone's memory, and 4K could take up 16GB.

If you want accurate GPS plots (speed/position on track) you will need a separate/faster GPS sensor too...as most phones only refresh at 1Hz, whereas the aftermarket options offer 5-20Hz.

Thanks all … looks like the options are Harry’s app plus the iPhone window mount or a GPS gopro and mount … will take a look at the pros and cons of each …

If your seats have traditional headrests on posts, you can buy mounts that can place your camera (or phone) in between the seats - the perspective will be much nicer than just filming out the front window.

An action camera will give you a wider angle which looks cool. 4k is not really necessary but 60fps will make your videos look smoother. I have an old Hero3 which does 1080p60 and spare batteries and stuff are cheap on ebay for the older cameras.

Everything else is a bonus. I value being able to connect an external microphone which a lot of the cheap new 4k action cameras don't support, but this is not required unless you take passengers and chat a lot.
