Discussion
i alway wanted to drive a car in tracks, i only have 1987 Volvo 340DL, it's rear wheel drive swedish brick with 1.4 litre. i bought it for 250 quid.
So can i drive this car on track, or buy new car alltogother?
i'm only 23, I am student. so i might get other rwd car for cheap... i wantewd to go on 'ring soon...
so is my car suitable for trackday session ?

Fromm personal experience (sadly) I can confirm that the power and adhesion limits of a Volvo 340 are so low that they can reasonably be explored on the road. In that sense it can be fun to drive since you can thrash the thing to within an inch of its life, get the tail hanging out on roundabouts, lift the inside rear wheel and all at the speeds normal cars cope with quite happily.
Something with a lot more poke and better suspension for track days, methinks, however they may be outside your budget.

To hell with it, take it to an airfield and thrash the pants off it. Get yourself in a beginners session and go wild. So what if it handles like a sponge and has the performance of a fishbowl??
Sounds hysterical!!
As for taking it to the ring... Hmmm... now for that it would certainly help if your car had some poke. You'd have to constantly be looking in your mirror and allowing other cars to overtake which would detract somewhat from the experience methinks.

You can take anything you like on a track day. As long as you show courtesy, it doesn't matter.
Ok, a high performance car might be more fun, but it's a lot more satisfying to drive a slow car fast, than it is to drive a fast car slowly.
The number of times I've been to a track day, and seen some guy in a Griff pootling round like he's out for a Sunday drive. He'd do just as well in a Maestro, but I'm not going to put him down. He's doing what he wants to do.
This guy is a student (who obviously hasn't got to the spelling and grammar modules in his course yet), so he isn't going to have the cash for something flash, or to hire a car for the day. I also doubt he'd go out on track with the idea of killing it, as he'll need to drive it to collage the next day.
I think he should go out and have some fun if he wants to. If nothing else, nobody will expect him to be fast.

I've seen several 340s at Goodwood, one of them sprinting! (It may have been a 360 or whatever the 'faster' version is).
One of the standard ones got it wrong coming out of the chicane and fishtailed all the way to the pit entrance (quite slowly though). One of the more interesting laps to watch.
I say go and have fun, get an instructor to show you the lines and techniques (early in the day) and learn how to drive your tank fast and safely!
