I'm getting a new (to me) track-day car, which will be SORN'd, but I will of course see an increasing mileage from non-public-road use (trailered to track days). Value of the car £4-5k.

I imagine a mainstream insurer will offer a laid-up policy, but want me to declare a zero mileage for the year, which of course it won't be (public road use = zero, but overall mileage will be more. Actually, now I think about it, I've got no idea what an average track day would be in mileage? Anyone? scratchchin).

So ideally if anyone has (say) a broker contact who will just "get this" and sort at minimal cost and fuss I would be extremely grateful for a contact.

(ps. I would be happy to not bother to insure (effectively self-insure - it's SORN'd anyway) but the storage place I am using for the car want a policy in place - presumably so if my car should set itself on fire and take out the rest of their unit they have some comeback on me!! Which is fair enough if I can sort cheaply and easily).

Any pointers/ contacts much appreciated, thanks beer

Can't help you with the insurance part of your post (I've often wondered about the answer though), but average mileage for a single trackday for me is 150-190 miles on track. 20-25 minute sessions, with 30-40 minute break in between (or until the calipers are relatively cool to the touch).

I am about the same for an average day.

Is it a car you could disconnect the odometer on?

Try A-Plan (Thatcham) they are always pretty good & helpful to me.

Thanks both. Useful to know rough mileage.

Not sure I'd want to get into tampering with the odometer to be honest.

I'll have a ring around of some brokers tomorrow - A-Plan are one I would try, as I've used them before (modified policies, not laid-up).

I looked at changing my REIS policy to laid-up, but the security requirements were significantly higher than my standard policy (garaged with bars on the window among others) and the premium was only around £50 cheaper. Figured it was easier to just insure the car despite it not turning a wheel for two years.

I’m not sure a normal policy would cover the damage to other cars if yours spontaneously combusted while in storage would it?

I do some classic/race car storage and prefer to include the insurance with the storage cost as it makes sure it is covered properly!

I don't know to be honest... I just know the agreement says that I confirm the vehicle is insured to its market value. (I hadn't intended to insure, but looks like it's a condition of storage of the car).

Conversely, when (after 6 months last year) I changed to laid up, I got £80 back.

Full year laid up £130, full renewal £265.

Does the car have an MOT?

I’d go with a specialist road policy with trackday provision for flexibility. Then just do monthly tax if ever required. Not exactly the same as you, but I found very little difference between an ‘off-road’ policy and a low mileage road policy with trackdays.

That was with Classic Line.
