Track Only Car and trailering to Mainland Europe post Brexit
Discussion
Interested in how people are planning to deal with the new controls proposed on track only cars movement into mainland Europe for the season ahead.
I am in the category where id like to take my non road registered car (BMW M235i Racing) in the trailer to Germany for 6 months to store between using it at the Ring and Spa. However, the potential costs are putting me off to be honest and in particular the (40%?) deposit in cash or insurance.
Anyone got any good learnings so far or plans they have put in place?
Cheers

Well from the stuff around currently as you've read it's carnet needed, this might prove to not be needed yet but I'm not too hopeful, with cv19 travel restrictions & early part of season not many have been outbound yet to test it without a carnet, but for commercial users, as myself we have to do full customs clearance or a carnet now anyway, an utter faff & lots of time & costs.
You could transport it as temporary goods but it's far more of a faff than a carnet.
If you can avoid doing that certainly do, it's more of a faff than simply the cost, you need to visit a customs facility on the way out to get it inspected & stamped & must get a stamp on EU side, so if on tunnel you'll have to go to the freight side at calais.
So how to avoid, well road registered to you & mot & green card.
For your vehicle I know as I've transported it for you I know it's a factory built purpose built racer that's not an easy option, need sva test & lots of modifications to pass etc etc.
So what would I do in your shoes? Hmm well morally I know folks will disagree with me, but I'd buy the identity of a scrap bmw would be attributed to the racer, an mot & get it put on insurance.
For example- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2008-BMW-1Series-E81-Bo...
It will never be used on road it's merely to save you customs issues.

The UK is no longer in a customs union with the EU, so the carnet system, which is used the world over, is to prevent the movement of things, basically that you could sell, without paying duty on them. Taking a car into a country and leaving it there for 6 months is exactly what these things are aimed at. Ensuring duty is collected if you happen to decide to sell it to someone and not bring it back. The concept is not having to do this is a car is taxed and registered is about the vehicle you are traveling in as it assume you will be coming back in it. Taking a car on a trailer, taxed etc. or not is, again, exactly what customs are looking to ensure there is a carnet for. Also, trying to frig it, runs a risk of some quite emotional situations.
I was going to wait for Wh00sher to blog his first NBR trip of the year.. I'm guessing that'll include all the info I need
however motorsport has same issue and there's resource there that's helpful :

I go Hull > Rotterdam usually which may be slightly different. I know Nigel uses the same crossing.

I've written off Spa and Ring trips this year as between Brexit and Covid its a PITA.
