Tuition recommendations
Discussion
I'm looking for a driving school to get some good track habits established before I develop bad ones, with a view to a MX5/Locost series in 2022 when I hope to have a bit more time. The Jim Russell school would have been brilliant, from what I know if it, but is no more. I like the Driver61 online stuff, but it's £2k/day for track time. The ARDS schools all seem to be geared towards the MSA test but that's about it, you're on your own. Can anyone recommend an active, real-world school with a structured series, or similar? Or simply go out and do lots of track days and learn through trial and error?
Trackdays are are great way to practice and you can get tuition via the organiser or bring your own coach along. Either way, the seat time can be crucial but you’re absolutely right that some guidance will ensure you are practicing the right things! I could point you towards some good guys depending on where you are etc if you wanted some 1to1 instruction.
If you want to do it via an ARDS school then I think The Motorsports School is the only one whose main business actually is motorsport coaching, Pete Edwards runs it, he is a top guy and well worth talking to.

Another recommendation for Pete Edwards and his team!
Speak to Mel or Pete at https://www.themotorsportsschool.co.uk/.
Yes the do the ARDS test but they also have a list of instructors will also do track day coaching and help you improve over a period of time either in your own car or in one of their fwd or rwd cars.
They are driver coaches not just ARDS test providers. Nice people and well recommended. Please tell them I sent you along!

I would highly recommend Colin at CAT Driver Training
https://catdrivertraining.co.uk/
I have done it with a more experienced mate before going on my 1st ever track day and it gave me enough confidence to enjoy it and be reasonably comfortable. Now 3yrs and 20+ track day later still consider it one of the best training and hopefully will be back (now to correct some bad habits and improve further).
The training is at Millbrook proving ground, so you can explore the limits of your car (and you) in a safe environment and combine with good theoretically background explanations (which you rarely, if ever, get from a track day instructor).
Colin also does track day tuition. I am yet to try it was highly recommended by those who have done it.
