What do you guys do in regards to insuring your cars to drive to and from track?

I'm building a 325ti Compact with a 3.0 engine. I got a quote to insure it in the normal way and it's mega bucks for 6 days use a year. I was thinking of maybe just using the 3rd party option that comes with my daily. Wondering if there's another option I haven't thought about.

I don't think buying a trailer is practical as I haven't anywhere to store the trailer.

Doesn't the 3rd party thing only apply if the car in question has an existing insurance policy? I could be wrong so check your own policy terms. I guess for 6 days a year you could try using a short term car insurance like Cuvva or Veygo and just insure it for the days you need the car for. I've used Veygo before and it worked well

And usually also excludes cars owned by you.

Some of the track/race insurance companies offer 'road traffic act' insurance for road sections of events - but it's for 'competition vehicles' not just track cars, and you need an MSUK Competition Licence. Overall it will not be cheap and you may be best just getting it included as part of a multi-car policy on very limited mileage and TPF&T.

In my case I just get limited mileage road insurance from Admiral (as part of a multi-car policy with my daily driver) and pay for the track day insurance individually (about £100/day from MORIS).

I believe that's the case. The vehicle has to be owned by someone else who has it insured fully comp for another driver to have auto third party cover via their own policy on their own vehicle.

OP - how old is the car? Would it qualify for a classic policy?

The car is 2001. I think the car has to be over 25 years old but I could be wrong.

I'm with Direct Line for the daily driver, if memory serves me I called them when it was a standard 325ti and they wanted another £700 on top of what I already pay, I'm not sure they'd be that interested now it's somewhat modified. My insurance is coming up for renewal maybe I'll call round some of the cars that insure modified cars and see if they can put something together for me.

The quote for a standard 325ti is £19.60 for the day.

At the moment the car has the 3.0 engine which looks the same as the 2.5. However I think the Coilovers might be a bit of a give away.

Yep no problem with off road parking.

Does your car have modifications?

Who do you use that covers them on a day insurance basis?

Reis Motorsport insurance have served me well past few years, at least with regards to cover and quotes. Never had to use them in anger though. Limited mileage policy, mirrored no claims, very reasonable. Naturally, all mods declared and they are extensive. Slightly less per year than my Octavia vRS daily costs to insure.

I think you'll struggle with the day insurers & a modified track car & regular insurers in general.

Need a modified or classic policy, Classic line used to be good for me, had several track cars with 'em.

On my work fleet policy now so far easier.

There are many "specialist/modified" insurers out there, just google something like "track day insurance" or "modified car insurance" & get on the phone.

Mine is generally around £230 for 8k miles/year with A-plan at Thatcham.

Historically I have used them also with my previous 328i, and also Competition Car Insurance with an older 325i, all of which were similar pricing.
