Feel compelled to post about a lad in his Clio 182 at Donnington park yesterday.

I just couldn't live with him in my Mk3 275 Megane. I just had to step aside and watch him go. Even my brother in his GT4 was struggling to keep him behind.

I had a quick chat to him afterward, just a local lad, very lightly modified Clio which was stripped and with no engine mods.

A very talented driver, i joy to watch...

That's great to hear. We need more youngsters on track days as the old gits like me will eventually stop.
Did you check what tyres he was on? That can make quite a difference compared to a road tyre, particularly after a few laps. Don't tell me you were on Cup2s yourself smile

I was on a brand new set of AR1’s, which were giving massive grip!

My pace felt fine over-taking cars I would expect to and likewise being overtaken by faster cars, standard trackday stuff.

Then along comes this chap in his Clio just tearing up the place.

He was just a talented guy, I’ve seen it before, the young footballer scoring goals for fun or a cricketer taking a bowling attack apart. It’s a joy to watch, I thing that as you get older I think you appreciate more.

There are some super quick youngsters out there for sure.

I used to use slicks in my early years, in my old EK9 Civic Type R, quite often flying past more exotic stuff, looking back it was more the tyres than me. You quickly understand how much you have to learn when you try to keep up with someone in an identical car and fail miserably!

That would make sense, he was looking at the wear on my Ar1’s.

I’m not sure how quick 1.22 is for a lap of donnington but it looked bloody quick from where I was sitting!

Any thoughts on his pace, 1.22 donnington, Clio 182, Toyo r888, look like a drop on the suspension so assume coil overs.

Interested to know from a very standard track dayer!

I’m guessing that was Wednesday evening?

Cos we were on the GP layout in the day which would make 1.22 very impressive laugh.

we caught the tail end of that and watched from the car park - much respect to the guys in a Renault 5 GT turbo and the nomad!

Fastest race lap in a Clio 172 in last years CSCC Tin Tops race was 1:21.03.
Dry/sunny conditions and they would have been on List1c tyres so Toyo 888s, Yoko A048s, or similar.

So he was pretty quick then on a clio which 'owed him £3000' on a crowded track day full of idiots like me!

I had a pretty lengthy chat with this lad on facebook about the 1:22 - in truth i was about to call BS but he had consistent data for lap after lap. Its damn risky without a cage, but considering he's done relatively cheap mods to it (cheap buckets, as you say 888's on the front, and stripped it out on coilovers) it is a very very impressive time.

I was there the week before in my Clio 197, which has a great spec and i felt like I was going at a strong pace and i was doing 1:26's. Now i did spin the previous time so I am wary but my god i genuinely don't know how i could go 4 secs a lap faster, deeply impressive.

Clearly I need to man up and get some coaching

It was impressive to watch - any power advantage I had was just overcome by talent. Just as it should be really. He was also worrying my brother in his GT4 on cup 2’s...

Thank you tongue out

I suppose they may have been racing around somewhere on the edge of Telford or alternatively in a village in Lincolnshire!

I've seen this happen before, so I was at Donny for the first time in my M4 (both car & track) on the Monday before your track day and the boys from the Camber & Combustion YouTube channel were there and they just absolutely send it with so much confidence. I was also overtaken by them in a car with twice the power - it happens!

I'd recommend giving them a sub and follow they seem like really good guys and always up for a laugh.
