Are these still banned? And if so, does that apply to open winged seats also? Struggled to find any up to date information on this, to be honest.

Still banned on TF days, open and closed style.

OK for track days.

I assume you mean for Touristenfahrten...and the terms still state:

Touristenfahrten Driving Regulations said:
Section 1 – DRIVING PERMIT (DRIVING LICENCE)
  1. Only motor vehicles which comply with the German Road Vehicle Registration Regulation (StVZO) shall be allowed to drive on the Nürburgring. Excluded from the tourist drives on the Nürburgring are vehicles which due to their design or because of their technical condition have a minimum speed slower than 60 km/h, with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 2,8t, with full bucket seats (driver and passenger), with upgraded or not standard removeable steering wheels, with HANS (head and neck support), with unpadded cages, with additional front or rear mounted fittings such as spoilers and aerodynamic components that protrude beyond the car‘s original width and height and have sharp edges, with number plates (red numbers), short number plates (03 and 04 numbers) and vintage car exchange number plates (07 numbers). Also excluded are quad bikes, trikes and karts.

I'm not sure how they'd police the winged seat rule. It's very much a free-for-all getting on there once you have a ticket.

It is a bit random.

Maybe they just have weekends where they're told to do spot-checks, or maybe they choose someone who's being a knob (i.e. doing burnouts on the approach, or revving the nuts of their engine to show how loud their exhaust is).

Would be a completely different issue if you're involved in an accident and the police are involved though.

I have to agree with the above , in the past 16 years I've been going the only people I've noticed being turned away or told off is the 'look at me dheads ' ive sat in a few cars over the years that were little more than touring car spec on the face of it and none of the marshals have given a second glance .
I did feel very sorry for the guy on the single cylinder vintage motorbike that had ridden there from the south coast of England on a day trip to do a couple of laps then go home the same day , they chose that day to do a noise test on the tf day and turned him away twice that I saw !
They also chased a guy in a c2 corvette for being to noisy , this was years ago mind .

I can confirm from personal bitter experience that open eared bucket seats are banned on TF days as we got stopped at the barrier and told we couldn’t run on a TF day. No amount of pleading worked.. and our car doesn’t look like anything other than a road legal M3. So really not worth the risk...

I have read that before, but I must not have twigged the HANS bit, as last time I went I wore HANS for 3 days of TF without any issues.

Why would they not let you wear HANS if the harnesses/seats are set-up for it? I'm heading back over in April/May for some more TF, and always prefer to wear HANS whenever I'm on a track if possible....
