I went karting for the 1st time in a long time on the weekend at Absolute Karting in Bristol, Absolutely great fun driving and now feel the need for more.....
and improve on my 55 second time (I believe I would gain a good few seconds by braking earlier and sliding less!).

However my body (im 30) got absolutely battered, mostly my arms and neck, I am still sore 2 days later.
However I am not overly fit! Plus going backwards into a wall at full pelt won't have helped!


I am considering their AKC scheme of £28/ Month and can turn up as many times as you like which is fantastic value.


However will my body get used to this punishment? and hurt less or am I in for a painful hobby?

If it's muscle fatigue, it's a lack of fitness; if it's bruising, there's not much you can do about it.

Same age and feel the same lol especially the indoor circuits with more turns.

I bought some OMP karting gloves off eBay ahead of my second go and it took some of the wrist and forearm strain off.

I'm in my late 50s. Went karting for a works thing a couple of years ago.

Knackering but still as great fun as I remember doing it in my younger years.

Got T-boned by some crazy young whipper snapper and fractured me ribs.

Carried on, must of been the adrenaline, but boy was I uncomfortable for a few months after.

It does, yes.

As any other sport, you're using muscles that you wouldn't use otherwise, you'll get used to it.

However, karting is one of the most physically demanding motorsports, and when you step up from renting level to true racing go-karts, rib protectors is completely necessary to avoid injuring your ribs after repeated high g-force corners and harsh bumps.

it's kart fitness smile you're muscles will get used to it.

I've helped a few who've struggled for 15minute outdoor sessions who have built themselves up for 90m prokart or 2hr Sodi kart stints. The first time you get it done, you'll be able to talk yourself into doing it again and you'll stay alert for longer.

Indoors after a few visits should be quite easy on the shoulders, arms, neck and compression in the ribs (unless you crash) a rib protector (like that tillet above) will help a LOT in outdoors but indoors you shouldnt really need it. Plenty of 60+ year olds racing in the south-west btw, must be something in the water.

It can get more painful, I was karting earlier this year and some teenage moron t-boned me in a hairpin (goodness knows where he would have ended up if I was not there!) and broke two of my ribs.

The kid stopped driving right after I yelled abuse at him in English (this was at a karting place in Innsbruck). I continued driving to be angry-stared by his parents for the next 5 laps.

Yes, you do get "kart fit" if you're doing it fairly regularly, though general fitness - good muscular endurance in your core and upper body along with good cardiovascular fitness - are an advantage.

A mate and I share a pro-kart and we do 2 hour endurance races, doing a single 1 hour stint each. First race after a bit of a lay-off is hard and the last 20 minutes are an exercise in fatigue/pace management. But a couple of races into a season and an hour isn't too bad.

I remember getting a bronze medal in a stag day 6 hour endurance kart race. I was so determined to win despite a tequila drenched pre stag night the day before.

So I did most of the driving as my two team mates were so slow. The urge to throw up in every corner and the stink of tequila fueled burps were almost too much but I endured hehe

You're the reason when I go arrive and drive I take my own lid but use the centres overalls etc Once you've seen someone chunder in a lid it makes your mind up pretty quick hehe

My used to get golf ball size lumps on my ribs after a race weekend, tried a rib protector but didn’t like them

Same on my inner knee caps from my legs bashing the side of the petrol tank
