I’ve got a track day with javelin tomorrow at Mallory park, I’m in a car with full interior so do you think there will be any chance of getting away with wearing shorts instead of full length bottoms?

Maybe. Suggest take both and change as necessary.

Might have to be nomex shorts.

Seriously, are long trousers a requirement? What difference will it make?

Take long sleeves and trousers, as well as shorts and a tee you can always change. And you will probably want to change for the drive back.

I'd probably take clean undercrackers in this weather too. Betty swollocks.

I have always assumed it was a fire safety thing, but it makes no sense as there is no stipulation not to wear something terrible like polyester which will melt into your arms rather than something vaguely fire retardant like cotton.

I’m going to take a change of clothes anyway. I’ll go in shorts and play dumb untill I get told to change, I did a track day at Mallory a few years back and got through about 3/4 of the day in a t shirt before being told to cover my arms. But they said that was because I was in a car that didn’t have door cards

Arms and legs covered is mainly for flying glass.

Been told this at numerous trackdays.

and yet at the trackday I was at yesterday, it was only for open top cars that needed arms covered. Which was a shame for me in 30 degs heat wearing a jumper in my Renault Twingo....

Also helps prevents grazes or friction burns if you bounce about or need to be dragged out of the car for any reason. Clothes slide a bit easier than skin too and they’re easier to grab hold of.

They rarely stipulate that it has to be a heavyweight woollen jumper & thick jeans/corduroys though - so a thin full-length shirt & cotton summer trousers/chinos will work too (well, that's what I use).

Does anybody have a good recommendation for some long sleeved tops for trackday use? I've had a trusty long-sleeved t'shirt that I used for every trackday I've done since 2012 but pulled it out for Croft a few weeks ago to find that moths have had a chunk out of it, right on my nipple laugh

Something gym-friendly I imagine would be good, something that's cool when things get a bit sweaty.

ETA: All the gym stuff I find looks really tight for showing off, last thing I want to be doing is showing off the contours of my abdomen in the pitlane.

Well it was no shorts and you could wear a normal t shirt if you still had the factory interior installed

I’ve got a long sleeved Driftworks t shirt that is good

Light shorts and t shirt. Take boiler suit/overalls. Wear those in the car over your shorts & t-shirt, strip it off when you get out between sessions. I've done this on numerous occasions - even worn the overalls over a bare chest when really hot, then take them off and stick a t-shirt on when you get out the car.

Be warned though. Boiler suits are made to be hard wearing. Without a t-shirt underneath and with harnesses creating friction in just the right places, nipples will chafe.

How about a decent NOMEX underwear top from Demon Tweaks, etc? Satisfies the regulation, keep you cool and has the added benefit of being flame-resistant in the extremely unlikely event you do actually catch fire?

Funnily enough I was looking at those in the Demon Tweeks catalogue this morning. Did think you might look a bit "all the gear no idea" though.

I tend to wear trousers with zip off legs so they can be worn as shorts.

jeans for the lower half, long sleeve baselayer for the top. really comfy and lightweight and allows you to keep yourself cool since it's tight fitting.
I found it hard to justify the nomex gear being a run what ya brung casual trackdayer.

Pretty much this. although I tend to wear some lightweight walking trousers as they dry quicker than jeans when it inevitably rains. A Helly Hansen type long sleeve (poor man's Nomex) is good as it wicks sweat away from your skin and dries quickly. I've never tried bare legs in a Seven but the footwell and transmission tunnel get pretty hot so I wouldn't want to risk char-grilling my legs down there.....

If you're doing Lydden Hill take driving gloves as well or risk having to wear the (actual) gardening gloves they sell hehe
