Which 4 door car hatch/saloon/estate is capable of being an entertaining and reliable track capable daily with minimal mods (tyres and brakes) ?

I'm thinking E36 M3 4 door or potentially an E46 330i with an LSD?

5 door mk5 Golf GTI?

RX-8.

Factor in an immediate warrantied engine rebuild and tune (well within budget) - go enjoy.

there are a few emerging at 10k or slightly under. Obviously these maybe a little rough around the edges but still a competent car.

For 10k I could think of a dozen cars better than an E46 330. And I've had two of them.

I'd go looking for one of the widetrack, STi Imprezas with the variable central diff.

Great fun on track with a few tweaks, and perfectly sensible on the road.

MK5 GTI but the Edition 30 -> around 8K for a good example. A remap will take it to around 310 hp (this is tried and tested to be safe). Leaving around £1600 to get some good brakes up front.

You could spend a fair amount on a 330i with 10k and make it a bit of a weapon.

That's true of a LOT of cars for <£10k.

And I could name at least 20 better base cars to start with than an E46 330.

Again, I say this as someone who owns a track car and has a LOT of experience with the E46 330.

Giulia QF. Best 4 door track ready car I've owned. Add Michelin MPS4S tyres and Performance Friction pads and it'll do a good few track days before they need swapping out.

Bloke owns car he likes.

Bloke doesn't read 'what car' title properly.

Bloke comes in and inappropriately recommends his own car.

PH in a nutshell. :joy:

Unless he’s offering his Giulia for 10k?

I’d like a N/A manual car. Seriously considered an E90 M3 but potentially looking for something cheaper as I want to keep my other cars and the missus....

A 335i saloon or estate with an LSD and stiffer suspension would be interesting to build, cheap and easy to get lots of power (360bhp is easily available), but all 3 series have the same problem which is weight they are too heavy.

this would be a good base for a track car.

A BMW 130i 5 door would be a better bet, just need to find an LSD, bigger front brakes.

I've owned most versions of 6 cylinder 1 and 3 series and would suggest looking at 130 as an option.

I'm also an ex 130i owner. Fun car if a little numb at times. As a road car the short wheelbase kept you on your toes so would be interesting to try one on track.

1 Series 5 door is a good shout.

I'll have that 10k Giulia QF though. laugh

The 335 is only 150kg heavier than the (already heavy) 130.

If you want a heavier car, which seems sensible if you need it to share civilised duties, then you need to look at the costs of consumables as part of the equation.

You're going to burn through tyres and brakes pretty quickly, and put a lot more stress on suspension components (e.g. bushes).

Just moved from an E36 M3 trackcar (trailered / stripped / coilovers etc) to an E92 road/track car.

first outing in the E92 was on monday at bedford - very please

standard suspension (edc) with eibach springs
standard brakes with uprated pads - enough to lock the wheels on track
toyo R888 / pzero corsa tyres
GRP shell seats to keep you in place on track

you can feel the weight slightly on track, but turns in amazingly, MDM only kicks in when you over cook it

on the road, its great too - not ruined like the e36

but it'll be more than your budget by a couple £ks especially when you add in the £1400 for new bearing shells

I’m trying to do it a bit cheaper than an E90 if I can.

Keeping my GTR, Z4M and a stripped + caged MR2 as fun cars so this additional one is supposed to be relatively sensible but I’d like to be able to do a trackday in it without worry if needed.

It’s the day to day running costs of petrol + servicing on the E90 that’s made me look elsewhere. FD2 is tempting as Hondas tend to be low maintenance compared to M cars.

I can’t see the missus saying yes to it’s looks though hence keeping the 130i in mind.

For RWD and out of the box, this is the best answer.

Go to any grassroots motorsports event and look at what you see on track.

The vast majority of saloons will be BMW. I would fish in that pond, because RWD, Manual, NA, and ample aftermarket parts available.
