I'm getting a few bits done on my Mini, with a view to having the car ready for a few trackdays later in the summer.

It's probably not going to be a 100% dedicated track car (will still keep full interior etc.), but having run a track car on proper 'semi-slicks' (R1Rs) in the past, I'm curious as to how good a road-based tyre can be in comparison.

The above are both ~£100 a corner fitted, which seems like a decent enough price.
But, am I going to destroy the Michelins with hard/prolonged use on track?
Or, am I going to regret choosing the Nankangs when I want a spirited drive on the road?

Has anyone used both, ideally in a similar setup (FWD, 200bhp, 1.1ton, LSD)?

Simple answer - both.

Simple answer bay of e - 2nd hand wheels with track focused rubber, it will save you money long term, it is what I do on my 220bhp r53.

A lovely idea, but too much aggro. I live in a flat in London, with limited storage. I'm not using that limited space for a spare set of wheels.

The car will only be driven for a couple of thousand track or 'enthusiastic' road miles a year. So no dice.

In that case the only thing you can do is to decide which is the most important & go with that compromise.

I have Pirelli P Zero run flats on my MINI... the pair that were on the car when I got it were reasonably new but managed 12 track days before they were worn out end needed replacing - so they survived well.

Clearly they aren't as grippy as the Michelins (at least the P Zeros on the MINI are not as grippy as the MPSS on my BMW) but I think that makes the car more fun on track, but it might give you a view of how well the MPS4s will survive on track.

That's helpful, thank you.

I'm more concerned about their ability to survive a hammering, without grip suddenly going off a cliff. There's a good YT test in a much heavier Focus ST, where the tester says that after 3-4 laps you can start to feel the PS4 starting to drop off.

In your position I’d just be putting yoko ad08r’s on. That’ll do it.

Blackcircles are offering them for £115 fitted (215/45/17), which seems like a bit of a bargain.

Perhaps that's worth exploring...

AD08R are a fantastic tyre. I have run them for the past 3 years and loved them on my road car. Pretty decent in the wet. The only snag is that they severely lose grip when they get past about 2mm.

I run my z4 track/weekend car all year round on federal 595rsrs. No problems, but it rarely sees wet roads.

Personally if i was running one tyre for both weekend driving and track driving, itd be track tyres all year. Yes a road tyre is better in the wet, but thats a rare case for a weekend fun car, whereas on track a road tyre grip will get progressively worse as the tyres heat up, whereas a track tyre will stay stable for lap after lap. And track tyres are soooo much better anyways, theres no contest.

I have ran NS2Rs in 180 tread wear, so the harder version, on the Megane for road and track. 6k miles including 5 track days was better than I expected, but that included swapping front to back.

They are brilliant on track, typically they take 1/2 laps to turn on and stay there for about 6/7 more laps with incredible consistency and then start going off predictably. The PS4 would give up on lap 3 and the outer edges would be buggered very quickly. This was on a heavy car so perhaps the MINI would cope better, particularly if you can find a couple of degrees of front neg camber.

They're quite noisy and uncomfortable on the road and can be tricky to turn on in winter but I also has a winter set anyway.

I would definitely consider them and would perhaps have gone 120, knowing how resilient they are.

AD08r are also an excellent choice but presumably 50% more cost ?

Fitted cost is about the same, actually. Which makes it a reasonably fair comparison.

There is several around here that tried it, seems like a pretty good tyre for the money, very similar to the old r888, wich is maybe not the best track tyre with its slightly softer sidewalls, but they are cheap

Absolute no brainer then. I'm getting the Nankang at trade and didn't realise retail was so close to the Yokis

Ado8r 215/45/17 mini 280 hp R53

Generally got 10k and 4 Bedford track days per set
Lots of heavy breaking on the full gt circuit

For a road based tyre couldn't be happier, I did have the benefit of spare rims and tyres for 4 months of the year, but not a necessity if your in the middle of London
