Hi, so it’s my fiancé’s 40th this year and I wanted to book him a driving experience.

His favourite car is a GTR so the track has to have that car at the location (which I know most do now) but that’s my problem, what track?

I am from a town near Oxford and he is from Coventry. We are going to the Lakes near his birthday so location wise doesn’t matter as such, although I think travelling north would be more ideal than south?

Could I get help on what circuit please because I would like him to get the most out of his laps and time..

TIA, Natasha.

Oulton Park is on the way up to the Lakes (just off the M6 after Crewe) - but I don't know if they have a GTR driving experience. You'd have to look on their website.

I don't know what sort of 'driving experience' you're expecting, or how much you're expecting to pay, but they tend to range from 1-2 laps for £100 to £2000 for a whole day (within limits of course). Some are better than others obviously, but I'll leave that advice to others who have actually done one.

I was thinking Donington or Oulton because they’re actual race tracks (not like go karting tracks or airfields - not that airfields would be a problem) but by the sounds of it, good luck is needed to try get a date for beginning of September for these.

Is Anglesey or Mallory any good?

Or anymore suggestions?

Anglesey is a nice circuit, with wonderful views over the sea, but is a bit more remote than Oulton/Donington.

Mallory is a bit small for a powerful car.

Mallory park is a very short circuit but good fun. Anglesey is absolutely incredible on a day with good weather.

Cadwell park is up around there and one of my favourite circuits. Not sure how many will do a track experience with a GTR. Those track day experiences tend to be a bit underwhelming from what I understand. Maybe an track prepped MX-5 would be a better experience? I think there are a few places that rent them.

There's also Silverstone (Northants, not far off the M1 before you get to the M6 and not far from Coventry).
Donington is also just off the M1, a bit further north, but you just take the A50 across to the M6 junction 16 at Stoke on Trent afterwards.
Oulton Park is off junction 18 or 19 of the M6.

They are the main race circuits on your way ooop north.

You are correct - there's not a lot down south

Usually these events are organised by third companies, and not by the track itself, so most likely they will have different cars availability depending on the date as well.

My suggestion is to decide what is your priority (date/location/car) and, starting from that, look for an appropriate event in one of these organisers webpage.

There are several of them, a quick search in google will give you lots of results.

Having worked on these experiences for the best part of twenty five years, I can say that what you get now, as against what you got then, is vastly different! There isn't much to choose between any of them, and they are very much a sausage factory operation, where the order of the day is "shovel them in, shovel them out".
Some people are more than happy to just sit in some of the cars, let alone driving them! I always feel that it is a big disappointment, especially when friends and family arrive with them, and other than some hanging around, the whole experience seems to be over in minutes.

If you are definitely looking to go ahead with it, I would look at this company, which is run by some friends of mine, and operate at various venues including Anglesey.

I would make a weekend of it, with the driving experience just filling in, so in other words. a weekend away being the prominent consideration, but still fulfilling what your original plan was!

If you look to do it in a few weeks, when hopefully we should be having some nice weather, Anglesey has some stunning coastline, bays, and villages, with some nice restaurants.
