Hi all,

Testing water...

A buddy and I are 50/50 'investors' in a little track day hack - a well maintained low mileage Mk2 MX5 with coilovers and fresh brakes. For context - we are both late 30's professionals, own other 'fun' cars (me a 450bhp big block chrome bumper c3 corvette; him a Porsche 996) in addition to us both having company cars for daily driving. We both have track day experience -I have also previously raced.

The idea of a 'disposable' track day car came up because neither of us is particularly keen to pay the ridiculous premiums associated with insuring our 'nicer' cars on track, and were not that willing to run them uninsured.

The car is currently based between his house in Buckinghamshire and mine in Wiltshire. We have set up a fair, transparent way to track who is spending what on the car, and to allocate the overall expenses back on a usage based model (based on a ratio of track;road miles per user). We true up expenses either way from time to time, based on whomever has been using the car most...

We have a policy under which mechanical failure is deemed to be split equally between us, because its never really clear who did the damage. vs who might have been in the car when it properly died, but accident damage is the responsibility of whomever is driving the car when it happens - regardless of fault... The total expense being 'whatever cost and labour is required to restore the car to the state it was in before the incident' (maximum risk being the value of the vehicle)

So - bearing all that in mind... in 2019 - we were considering upgrading the car... either fitting forced induction to boost it to about 200bhp at the wheels... or alternately getting shot of it and buying something with a bit more power to start with - but equally disposable (potentially a cat D), such as an early 3.0 Z4, 2.5/7 boxster or BMW 330. (no real fixed model in mind - just whatever pops up that we like the look of at the right price!)

But... the reality is that 99/100 days, the mx5 has stood unused and unloved at one of our respective houses...so rather than each of us throw another £x in to upgrade/replace the existing car which would be equally unused - the question is whether a like minded person is out there who would be interested in buying into a track day car syndicate?

rules, by laws etc are all up for discussion/negotiation... the main objective of the whole thing is to get the maximum amount of track time in a relatively fun car for as little money as possible (perhaps unsurprisingly - i'm an accountant!)

drop me a line if this is of interest, and we can see if something can be sorted...

Not necessarily true.

Under £500 pa to insure my GT3, car garaged, unlimited UK track days, 5000 miles pa limit. I think that’s reasonable.

Now if you want to run a dedicated ‘cheap’ & ‘disposable’ track hack and save your nice car for road driving only, then that’s another matter.

Fair comment... I think my pals 996 carrera 4s is about 500 for 5k, Inc porsche club only track days..

My cover, on the vette, however, explicitly excludes them... not that I would risk stone chips on my 2017 laid 'show quality' paint!

I did look at cover on my wife's 67 plate golf r, and 'day rate' was getting 200-250 per day for track cover!

Wear and tear is the other consideration.. one day wear and tear - tyres, brakes etc on your gt3 is probably equivalent to the whole season maintenance cost on an old hack! smile

Decent offer, I have inadvertently kinda ended up doing similar. When I bought my nice new BMW I kept my old 325ti for tracking, done a few and offered to go 50/50 on track days with my brother and a close mate. My brother is out of action just now but I've just done Silverstone with my mate, it's perfect running a couple of people to a car plus it's fun sharing the day with someone too. After 20 min out on track I'm ready for a rest so come in and give the car a bit of a rest before the other person takes it back out. We both have quick daily drivers but rather not thrash them to within an inch of their lives or risk damaging them. There is certainly something liberating knowing you dont have to drive the car to work the next day!

Just use it more!?! 3-4 days a year isnt enough to justify a track car, cost per use is so high you might as well rent a caterham for the day. When i shared a track hack with a mate, we did a trackday every month. Then we sold up and i bought a leggy 3.0 z4 on my own, still did 8 trackdays this year, always sharing with different mates who i trust.

What's the excess on that, though?

Can I ask who that's with please? I'm coming up to renewal.

Excess 10% of the car’s value.
