Where is the best place to but a cheap(ish) open face lid, doing a track day at croft and would rather buy a lid than rent one for £25.00/day.

Would also need to try it so anywhere in the NW would be best, cannot recall my size from my biking days and the last lid is in a swiss land fill but thats another story....

Cheers.

quite a good place is located on the site of silverstone race track (i think im right in thinking this. if its not there then it is another famous track).
that is where my father gets his stuff for racing.

i cant remember the name of the company, but if you do a search of "silverstone helmets" or something like that then you should find it.

hope this helps

I am after a helmet also.

Maybe a silly question, but can I just go buy a helmet from a motorbike shop that will conform to motorsport spec? I fancy the open face type.

I don't fancy renting a helmet, just think of all the sweaty bonces that had worn it.

that is the place i was tryin gto remember. cheers.

not all available helmets will conform to all motor regulations.
i may be wrong on this, but i dont think you will have any problems on track days with regulations. all they care is that you have some reasonable head protection.
but if you plan on racing then it is a different matter and you should ask the people in the shop (if they dont know whether it conforms or not then i dont think it is v wise buying from them!)

GPR and the like will sell good motorsport lids, however these are subject to VAT unlike motorbike lids

Also new bike lids can have the appropriate BS stamp for motorsport. But if it's only for track days you won't need that

I bought one last month (from GP Racewear @ Silverstone)..

BS approved helmets are not subject to VAT, however SNELL (generally considered a higher standard) ones are. I think if you intend to race then Snell ones will be suitable for longer that BS ones, however, for trackdays it doesn't generally matter -I think anything will be better than the one's I have been lent by circuits.

The best advice I have ever heard for buying helmets is to go somewhere with a large stock (ie GP racewear) and try as many on as possible, buy the one that fits best -not even all ones the same size will fit the same. I ended up with an end-of-line OMP SA2000 approved one that fitted much better than anything else, on special offer for exactly what I wanted to spend.

+GPR are open weekends in summer, so tie in a trip with going to spectate at the circuit.

I agree completely. Try it on first, it's one of the things that doesn't work mail order.
