Hi

Considering a Westfiled XTR-2 with a hyabusa engine.

I know a car is worth what someone is willing to pay but is £16k the going rate?

Seems such a small market so hard to gauge.

Anything I should be aware of before “pulling the trigger” 😂

Appreciate anyone’s experience or knowledge.

Ps it’ll be for the track.

It's old, unsupported, impossible to get parts for and in terms of aero cars wasn't that great in the first place. Its natural competitor is the Radical clubsport or prosport which can be had for less money (for not much more you could be in a SR3). I wouldn't be touching it for any more than about £10K.

Why would you buy a racecar on PH?

Caterham - nothing comes close to the fun you can have short of a Radical/Atom. Cornering speed makes for swift lap times, balanced and easy enough to steer with the throttle. No problem keeping up with, and embarrasing, road cars on a track day.

You can pick up an ex-race Caterham for around £15k

Personally I'd look at cars that race in the 750MC kitcar series' so RGB sports 1000 for bike engined or Sports Specials for car engined. Spire GT3, AB Sabre, Mittell that sort of thing. I quite like the look of the Eclipse SM1 actually but probably not easy to find second hand.

I think most of these can be made road legal.

Order is being a little unfair to these tbh.

Circuit driver did a comparison between an xtr2, sr3 and crossle and iirc the the xtr2 wasn’t embarrassed by the radical at the time.

However development pretty much stopped for the Westfield, and they concentrated on the xtr4. Which was also short lived.

I do agree with order re the parts availability though, you’d have to factor that in.

Driving wise they are very different to 7 types, I had both a 2 and 4 - bought the 2 after testing a megabusa and a caterham.

Personally, at 16k I’d go for a nice megabusa or whatever caterham you can get for that money. Although the xtrs look more unusual I’d expect the ownership experience to be less enjoyable.

Strippier, might have something of interest for you. You don’t accept email through PH so drop me a line when you can.

Thanks.

I currently have a Gen 2 radical SR1 and before that a westfield SEIW

Both are amazing fun to drive on the track. The westfield was more unbridled power whereas the radical feels more precise due to the aero in the corners.

I favour a westfield over a caterham as you can get a much higher powered car for less money. I sold mine for £12k and it had a very reliable 230bhp ST170 engine. The only Caterham to get close to me on track was the 400 and 620 variants. Not much other than GT3 or LMP style cars keep up with the radical from my experience. The LMP cars make me feel like i'm not even moving though! They fly past.

There's a road legal Spire GTR on Locost builders right now for £13k. I was quite tempted myself but to me that's too much cash for something I'll drive 3 times a year!

I have an XTR 2 (never driven the bloody thing though!) and whilst it is cool, if you want to go track only I would 100% suggest a radical instead, or do it properly and get a single seater.

Parts and information for the various radicals is easily available, last time I checked Westfield don't even mention the XTR's on their website in anyway! Although I have been lucky and they have had a couple of specific parts in stock when needed.

I think their value comes from the fact they are rare, they are from one of the better known kit car companies, and that you can make them road legal. Although I guess that was on the old IVA/SVA rules.

I'm slowly but surely sorting mine out, but to get it to a decent motorsport spec I am having to change so much stuff!

Use racecarsdirect.com to look for stuff, much more on there than on PH.

Feel free to ask any questions if you are still keen!

Ah now I see you have mentioned wanting something road legal, that was the main reason I ended up with the XTR2, but soon went off the idea. I dont think you'd ever get one of these Radical style cars to be any good on the road regardless of setup, and then it would be a terrible setup for any track stuff. I guess if it has to be road legal then a se7en would be best, but I would just go single seater!
