Just bought a GoPro Hero 2018 and I want to use it next Friday for trackday footage.

Looking for recommendations:

- Roll bar / cage mount? I have a Caterham with an FIA cage (38mm diameter). There are loads on Amazon and eBay but looking for ones you can recommend.

- External mic? I have heard sound is rubbish and an external mic is recommended for passenger footwell. Again loads on eBay / Amazon across a big price spectrum so looking for ones you have used?

Any other must haves to get best footage?

Thanks

I use an Ebay roll bar clamp on my radical and don't have a problem, I attach an additional tether (lock wire) from the camera to the roll bar just in case - It's not been needed though.

For wind noise just use the dive case and it should be fine.

That's with a go pro hero2 mounted as described, sounds a touch better in the dry iirc.

Also not sure if it's a problem with newer version but you can put pads in the case to prevent any steam/condensation in side the case.

Dunc.

I've got an ancient Drift HD so obviously a different scenario but the difference an external mic makes is profound on my set up!

...and that's just with a £3 one off ebay.

For a mount I've got an ultraclamp which is good quality but is a bit too small for the roll bar in this car annoyingly.

I have whatever the larger gopro mount is called - not the silly little one, but for larger tubes - from gopro, and it works fine on my FIA bar (also caterham). You're right, sound is bad.. on the gopro 2 'cos it rattles in the case, on the more recent virb that's solved, but all it really gets is wind..

ETA - looks like they don't do it anymore, but this one:

Where do you mount your external mic?

I use the standard Gopro one on my Westfield. A bit pricey but does the job.

Usually just in the passenger footwell clipped to the seat adjuster lever or just under the dash. I put it behind the driver's seat recently though as I had a passenger and found it sounded a bit nicer (deeper really) so that'll probably be where it'll go from now on. Vid is with it in the passenger footwell though.

I have mounted a Hero 2018 to my roll cage (competition one) using the large gopro roll bar mount. Seems robust and solid. I also purchased the gopro mic adapter and connected it to a rode lapel mic which was taped to the frame inside the boot on the LH side just above where the Caterham trackday exhaust exits. Sound is really good and no wind noise. This seemed easier and a shorter route than going under the dashboard.

I use manfrotto superclamps for gopros in my race car, as do a few of the TV companies:

https://www.manfrotto.us/super-clamp-w-stud

you need a mini ball-socket and the go-pro tripod mount:
https://www.manfrotto.co.uk/products/smartphones-a...

They should fit almost any type of rollbar, and when tight they really dont move.

I've used these for about 5 seasons racing and had a few quite big crashes(!) and they have never moved or come loose - highly recommended
