The company that has insured my road legal classic track day car for years
has stopped including track day cover, citing a large increase in the number of claims.

I've been regularly doing track days for 16 years and can't remember the last time I saw
a damaged car.

Is that just my experience, or have any of you noticed or heard of a recent increase in track day damage?

Conversely, I can't think of many days I've done & not seen a damaged car!

Me neither but as to if this has changed over the years or if any were insured or not I have no idea.

This. Single-car damage (i.e. running out of talent, hitting a barrier) happens fairly frequently. Car hitting another car I've only seen once in hundreds of track days.

So if you can control yourself and keep it on the tarmac you shouldn't need insurance.

In my case it's for when another clown piles into me, not my own (substantial) incompetence. It's not a when, but very much an if scenario, but one I'm happy to pay for, though each to their own of course. My 10% of the value excess means if I bin it myself, I'd have to do decent damage to make it worth claiming.

If the poster above could name the TDO he uses where he rarely sees cars undamaged, that would be great and I can avoid them...

I think it depends where you go too, it's rare that I do a day at Combe where someone doesn't damage their car in some way, whereas somewhere like Bedford it's pretty rare to see an accident at all.

It may simply be that your insurer/underwriter has seen a spike in payouts which have made it unprofitable so have got out of the market. I had no trouble getting cover this year.

Can I ask who your insurer is please?

People are overly focused on the TDO. IME the TDO is largely irrelevant. The venue and weather are the determining factors.

On a wet day at Oulton you can stand at druids and will see a couple of cars going into the barriers within the first hour, regardless of the TDO. At Silverstone you'd have to be going some to hit anything given the F1 standard run-off.

Yep - fair one - it was a bit tongue in cheek. We don't need to go down the road of TDOs who bias to road cars and TDOs who are open to teams testing. It's all about who's there on the day and no-one has much control over that. I'm also in the number who've done damage (a solo excursion) so I'm part of the stats, so to speak.

I'm hopeful it's not Markerstudy who've pulled the plug, as one way or another they've been the underlying company of most of my TD policies over the last five years.
