For some it may be a reality, for me it is more of a fantasy. But with having enforced downtime I find myself searching for that £20k car that you would have in your collection primarily for use on track.

So what would you have?

Either a hi spec race Clio or BMW M3 - had both as track day cars & both gave huge amounts of fun.

I have put what I feel is your key factor in bold above. I would be looking for a Caterham R300, a trailer and some change for running costs.

Yup. More bang for your buck, cheaper to run (brakes, tyres), more fun and you can push closer to the limit more as 7s give, in my opinion, the highest levels of feedback and predictability. I only sold my 7 track car and changed to an Exige as I'm getting old and can't stand the cold! ;-)

If you're relatively new to track days and don't want to go to the expense of trailering the new toy then I would seriously consider a Mazda MX5 BBR - it's sweet handling and super useable plus it shouldn't gobble up tyres and brakes and can be used on-tack and off-track in all weathers.

Check out this EVO Magazine video of the MX5 BBR:

If you're slightly more experienced and want something more dedicated then I would agree that a Caterham is the way to go.

It was only a converstation starter thread and what I was thinking about at the time. And as everyone is different I thought it'd be good to see what other people would go for smile

Well I’d buy back my old Formula Ford Ecoboost with a trailer.

You’d be better taking the car off the trailer

I would start with the requirements list, for me it would have to be..,

Rear Wheel Drive
Manual Gearbox
No / Very Limited, Driver Aids
Tin Top / Ability to drive to the circuit.

Caterhams are great, have previously owned, but the logistics around a trailer can be a pain.

I would personally go Porsche or Lotus.

For me it was the R26.R. Regret selling it. Currently using a Clio 182 which was fantastic fun at a wet Bedford yesterday
