My insurance is due for renewal about 3 days before I make my first trip to the ring. I currently use AON for my 'modern classic' policy on the 964, but I intend to ring around.

Does anyone know which ins companies will not insure me for this?

Well its a public toll road so unless specifically excluded you are covered on your normal insurance I think.

I have my 200 insured with Greenlight and, as Plotloss mentioned, they class the Nurburgring as a toll road. They will also add specific trackday cover to your policy as well.

Well I'm going to the Ring this weekend and my insurer (Peart) definately wont cover me. I argued that it is a public road etc. but they are adamant that because you have to register before you go on the road then it is an organised trial or something and is therefore not covered. Here is thier reply to my request whether i am covered:

"Mr Elsey,

Re Motor Insurance policy no 70-------7,
As requested i can confirm that you are not covered to drive around the Nurburgring track in Germany.

Regards

Sam."

I am a little disappointed to say the least and i will shop around for a more trackday friendly company come renewal time.

They do cover TVRCC trackdays in the UK though so they are not all bad.

I am going to have to get separate cover for the day by CCI at £202.00, better to be safe than sorry I guess.

This makes me soooooo mad!

What bollox - you don't need to register - you just buy a ticket - like you do for any toll road.

If they're going to turn you down - the least they could do is find out the facts.

Me too.

Just spoken to someone at MORIS, seems they can offer insurance for the ring at a competitive rate, will find out tomorrow.

Fact - It is a toll autobahn and so UK (and German)insurance covers it, full stop. Insurers in Germany do put a clause in on high performance cars saying 'not for Nurburgring' and they can do so, however unless they specifically add that wording, you are covered there.

PS Don't crash, have it moved and then say it was 4 miles from the 'ring - Nurburgring GmbH will bill you (or them) for the armco you take out!!!

If it was a track there wouldnt be laws that govern the use of the track.

For instance the Ring has 4 speed limits
You have to over take on the left, and you have to indicate
You have to use your lights
You have to have a road legal car

Doesnt sound like a track day to me

Question is why are you asking?

The more you ask the less you are likely to get

In the event of a mishap, you simply fill in the location as "the road from Adenau to Nurburg"

Because thats what is is...

Ben Lovejoy would probably appreciate a head's-up on these insurance agencies to add to his list:

See you at the Nordschleife May 13th!

I wish people would stop asking their insurers. unless it is specifically excluded in your policy then you are covered, its a public road subject to all standard german road rules. the more times they get asked the more likely they are to start including it as a standard clause.

I didn't have my policy to hand so i rang them up for peace of mind.

Somebody with authority has to tell these companies that it is a public road subject to all standard german road rules, as you said. I argued but there was no reasoning with them. I am prepared to do what ever i can to go to the Ring but I cant afford to take a chance when it comes to my P&J.

absolutely not, didnt mean for it to come across like that if it did. you wouldnt want to anyway, imagine crashing, then having to produce your docs to the politzi (dont leave the scene - normal road rules remember !) only for them to say 'ring excluded'. at which point you can add a driving without insurance charge to your woes

huh?! Just because a company states that Nürburgring related damage to YOUR car is not covered, does not necessarily mean that you're driving without insurance - they'd still have to pay for damage to another car/person if you're at fault.
The risk you take is having to pay for a new car if you total yours (and pick-up/storage charge, and armco damage, and lost revenue to the 'Ring if they have to close etc.etc.etc.)

I think they're a bit confused between the race track and the toll road.

As mentioned elsewhere, your covered on any public road or semi-public (toll road supermarket car parks etc)road unless your policy says otherwise.

I think you could quite rightly drive your car then, as you are not going on the Nurburgring....that is the GP circuit, you are going on a B road that is the Nordschleife

jon. agreed. i was lost on this toll road looking for an exit, went round in circles all day finally found a way out just in time for a few beers to settle my nerves, unfortunately took the same turn on sunday morning and ended up trapped again...

I've gotta agree - stop asking!

They are never going to say yes voluntarily, are they!

If you're not prepared to risk your P&J, then don't go - or even better - keep it garaged 24x7.
