To sell, or not to sell...
Discussion
So about 2 years ago, I bought a rather safe (read contentious!) cheap-ish car (from PH!) to turn into a sort of fast road-track day car. Purchase was swayed by having a strong support network where I lived, reputation of a bullet/proof engine, tuning potential and 4wd safety.
Fast forward to today, I've hardly driven 1k miles in it, it hasn't seen real road miles let alone track action and is now sat on my driveway looking sorry for itself. I've moved and lost my network and driving company and am getting more and more time poor.
In the 2yrs, I've spent about £1.5k on upgraded front brakes, lowering, strip out of rear interior and track tyres in full expectation of giving it hell! That, in addition to MOT, insurance and 2 batteries because they keep going flat!
However, as you can see, I just don't use it..
My head is saying sell it and walk away... what would others suggest?
(Audi TT mk1 225)

As a fellow Audi TT track driver I'd say, try to keep it and actually head out on track, it's pointless spending the money on it and not using it, how many times have you driven it in anger?
It you do decide to sell then pop it on the ttforum, but otherwise, I'd say try and actually drive it first, they can be mega on track!

Unfortunately/fortunately for a balanced view, I would say bad choice of car (seen loads "in the armco" on track) for the purpose, get rid if you can find a buyer.
Thats not down to it being a bad car believe me, thats bad driver. If you see a black one with white audi rings on the side of it during a track day let me know and I'll take you out in mine and change your mind. Armco not requiredC70R said:
At the end of the day, it's only a car... If you're not using it, and you don't have the drive/desire to get out on track, sell it and buy another later if you have a change of heart. It's not like they didn't make a lot of them after all...
This is what I thought, but am stuck on how/where to sell because its been modified now. Will give TT forum a look but wasn't sure it would sell due to mods.Burba said:

I would think that most people who wanted a road going MK1 would also want it lowered and upgraded brakes, and tyres are not going to be something that makes or breaks a sale (the price could reflect the cost of the next owner changing back to road tyres - btw what are the present track tyres?),but if you're selling, maybe you should try and cheaply find rear seats from a breaker?

I don't know how much these are worth, but I think If wanted to retain the track day option, but knew really it would only happen once in a blue moon I might be tempted to sell up and get something cheap that will also be rewarding. A 172 or similar seems a popular choice.
The perhaps its not quite so irksome when it doesn't get used so much as there isn't much cash tied up for that 'one day'
Also (and not wishing to say these are no good on track - I've not driven one) I think a real key - perhaps THE key - to a fun, exploitable car on a track is weight. Or lack of. I imagine (but again, don't know) that the TT isn't that light, so harder on everything as a result. Perhaps not ideal for the very occasional track day go-er

And whilst this may remain an option, I just don't know where a partially stripped and modded' TT is going to sell?I have been scouring the best places to do this, I just can't see where other than eBay??
If you are serious about selling, chuck it on the TT forum, it'll cost you £10 to register but you'll get interest, other than that, eBay.
Shame if you do decide to sell but I get it. Price it according to market not what it owes you and it should shift
Btw, as for weight, I'm down to 1197kg and running at a ratio of 223bhp per ton

1781cc : so you think it would shift, even with mods and partially stripped interior?
Going to get it cleaned up and some pics on the web - did consider breaking for parts but not sure how buoyant that market is.
Cant see why not, someone recently bought a half-started track car on the forum, it had a cage and buckets but still needed a lot of work.Going to get it cleaned up and some pics on the web - did consider breaking for parts but not sure how buoyant that market is.
There is also a track TT Facebook group, might be worth joining that and posting there.
Pistonheads has a track section in the for sale part too, eBay, gumtree, loads of options

Thanks for this - good leads! There is also a track TT Facebook group, might be worth joining that and posting there.

Was also thinking I could trade-in (if possible) for a weekend drop top, which both I and the wife could use if alone. It would at least get some use then!

This.If the car was super-rare, or a one-off, I'd maybe say keep it.
But an Audi TT? Flog this one, free up some space on your driveway, get some cash in your bank account, and buy another one if your circumstances change in the future.
Many (if not most) of us buy cars to suit our circumstances. Those of us with lots of kids have MPVs or SUVs, single guys/girls have MX-5s and the like, those who are addicted to track days have Caterhams, etc.
If the circumstances you currently find yourself in don't support your love of track days, get shot of the motor until you're in a position to revisit such activities.
