Thruxton Noise Limit
Discussion
Has anyone done a Thruxton trackday in a reasonably noisy car? I'm thinking of doing a day at Thruxton but it's a strict 90 dB(A) noise limit. I've just bought a Clio 182 which is fitted with a Scorpion cat-back system, it's not excessively loud but I don't want to turn up and be turned away.
I'm just wondering what sort of cars people have been able to get past noise testing?

They are strict on it, they have a lot of issues with NIMBYs, because obviously the airfield/racetrack hasn't been there for long.......
Had no problems in my 182 when it had a miltek cat-back and cone filter induction kit on it, but IIRC the scorpion exhausts are a fair bit louder. If you're local best bet is probably just to give them (or your closest track) a call and ask them if you can pop down and get it tested at a day you're not actually attending, most places are perfectly happy for you do to that.

As mentioned on FB, and for others benefit. They have a 90db static generally.
Ive been twice in my 182 - Once with a Decat and a Janspeed Ktec, that made 92-93 at other tracks, funnily enough - it made 89 at thruxton!.
Then with a scorpion 192 with cat fitted (2 box version), which made about 93db at Brands, also made 89 at thruxton the following year!
IMO they let people on the cusp go thru static, showing 89 for their records. However They were definitely making people make adjustments if they were making silly figures.
However if you trigger the trackside monitor more than once they will send you home. My mate in his Clio Trophy with Ktec exhaust and Decat, also made 89 on static, but once out on track he got blacked and warned. A few mins later he got a nice hint from a marshall to told to back off along the start finish straight! But I don't think he bothered and it didn't get mentioned again.

That's good info. I get between 90 and 95 at other tracks, do you reckon I have a chance at Thruxton?Ive been twice in my 182 - Once with a Decat and a Janspeed Ktec, that made 92-93 at other tracks, funnily enough - it made 89 at thruxton!.

I did a day at Thruxton last year. The noise limit there is one of the lowest in the country. Benefit - not too much fast stuff so I felt slightly quicker than I usually do :-)
I was in a Honda S2000 - stock, apart from taking the airbox lid off - registered at 88dB. There were lots of Clios there, but I'm not sure how many had louder exhausts...

I know what you mean. I was sat there ragging the nuts of my Megane up and down only to be told it was only 81 dB. They had a brand new Cayman GT4 on track that day and that surprised me as usually rear/mid Porsches struggle with noise limits. My 944 S2 race car tended to read between 89 dB and 92 dB at various tracks so I am fairly confident it will get on track at Thruxton. We will find out soon as my local track only 40 min away, absolutely love the place, my favourite track in the country.

Went with Goldtrack in my old 997 GTS which was normally 101db static. Melindi said they were relaxed with just one local householder being perennially difficult. Anyway went to the noise test, the man said take it to 4k revs!, he said good its 89db.
I guess there are days and days.....

That's good to know; my 996 reads 100dB normally.Anyway went to the noise test, the man said take it to 4k revs!, he said good its 89db.

Been with Goldtrack at Thruxton before in my other car; guess I'll just speak to them and see if I can pay on the day.
Thruxton is AWESOME.
I have done a Thruxton Day in my Boxster 986S. Standard exhaust. It isn't a noisy car and that was fine.
Tyre wear: blimey. It is a FAST circuit. It isn't often that you brake to 100mph to take a corner.Scared the life out of me.
Bloody good fun, though.
On the day I was there I was chasing a VX220. Great fun. On the fast section I would reel him in, then at the chicane by the grandstand he'd start to get away and pull ahead through the complex, then I'd reel him in again. Fascinating seeing the different strengths of the two cars (and drivers).

Its not a 100 mph corner if you have the tyres, chassis and guts to push it there. I agree though for me that one corner is the most terrifying in the country. Its not the speed, gone 3 figure speed on the throttle through Craner curves, didn't worry me much but that corner you push it bit more and end up sideways or just as bad understeering off onto the grass on the exit.
Still though love Thruxton because the sequence of corners before that which all blend into each other are for me the most enjoyable sequence of corners in the country.

Church is certainly is a corner that rewards commitment and kahunas. I was pushing a little too hard on tyres that were past there best towards the end of my last day there... resulted in a couple of brown trouser moments around church.

My 100E makes 105dB - can be a bit marginal on race days, test days are generally a no-no without a massive piece of metal bolted to the exhaust. Goodwood were quite good (lol) about it on a pre revival day, just a not to back off going past the noise monitors.
At the revival there are no noise limits, so we had a straight through pipe - sounded terrible at idle, sounded like angels screaming under load!
