Where's a good source for helmets for track day use ? Local (motor) bike shops ? Can't be mail order coz I'll have to try some on (no idea of head size ) ... so what TYPE of shop.

Also, what spec ? How much to spend minimum (without going silly) ?

Think you hit the nail on the head with Bike shops, but if you want a car specific lid, then somewhere like Raceways @ Donington, or Demon Tweaks is probably a good start, I've seem a nice Bell lid in Raceways for £150 which seems about middle ground.

Grandprix Racewear are excellent: they have shops in Chiswick (London) and Silverstone, a mail order catalogue and also an online shop.

You're right to want to try it on first though - it's important that it fits well, especially that you can't pull it off.

Also Nev, if it's to be used for competition you need to check it meets whatever standards have been set by the ruling body. Info's probably on one of the motorsport websites somewhere (i.e. I have no clue).

also, I found that one size fom one manufacturer that is a good fit does not mean the same size from another fits the same..

If you're coming to one of our trackdays then we can bring a selection of sizes for you to try on and then supply you with a brand new one in the correct size.

We sell the FM Axe helmet (Full Face Helmet BSI Type 'B' Approved) for £45.

The old adage "What's your head worth" springs to mind here. I wouldn't venture out on track in a £45 Type B approved helmet. That's the sort of thing 16 year olds wear on their mopeds (and they tend to die a lot).

You should at the very least go for a Type A, and preferably a Type A FR (which has a fire resistant lining).

I just got an AGV lid from Motorcycle City in Reading and the staff there were extremely helpful. I tried on almost every lid in the shop. The assistant first asked me what my budget was and then tried to match a helmet to that rather than get me to try on the most expensive. In the end I spent up to my budget and got a well fitting and comfortable lid. I looked on the net and found that the prices were about the same as well.

Each to his own I guess. A motorbike rider is very exposed and far more likely to hit something solid (tarmac, cars) in an accident than a person strapped into a car on a trackday. And is also far more likely to actually be involved in an accident than a person on a trackday.

I'm more than happy with my £45 helmet when harnessed into my Elise.

You usually find that a decent bike/motorsport shop will be like that. They're usually staffed by people who are genuinely interested in what they're selling. A helmet is one thing I wouldn't buy over the net. As mentioned earlier (and as you found out yourself), different makes and models fit differently.

I did the same when I was buying my first track day helmet. I went to a bike shop and spent a good hour or two trying on everything they had in my proce range before settling on what fitted me best.
