Mate is offering a very tidy, well bought, Z4 for sub £5k money. I really miss the track days I used to do in the track friendly Scooby & Evo so it is crossing the mind to get this and track it - ideally after fitting a roll cage as its a soft top. Is it stiff enough and will it be fun and reliable enough (70k miles) for small money I wonder? Even if someone ploughs into it it will not (financially) be the end of the world... Hmmm...idea

Brakes may well be its weakness. My son's Z4M Coupé has additional cooling ducts, braided hoses, DOT 5.1 fluid and Bluestuff pads and that's now okay on a trackday.

To be honest, that's not particularly cheap for a 2.5 Z4. £4-5k gets you into the far superior 3.0 (6spd box, better brakes etc.) with a few more miles, and the price of these is only going one way as winter approaches.

I'm planning on picking up a 3.0 early in 2017 to convert into a softcore trackday car, and barring an LSD if you're being really picky there's no reason why it shouldn't be fun to thrash. Mechanically they are very strong and relatively cheap to maintain, sharing most major driveline bits with other BMWs of the same era. Have a look on YT for a Fifth Gear video with Tiff (in a Boxster) and Jason Plato (in the BMW) demonstrating that they are perfectly able to entertain on track.

They're not a car you commonly see on a trackday, but I don't see why they wouldn't be good fun.

That said, as others have said, you'd ideally want to be starting with a 3.0.
