Been offered a rally experience...?
Discussion
Got the mrs a Phil Price rally school day. Few years ago but it was escorts at the time. Cracking day out in mid Wales, wish I had bought myself one at the time.
Few b+b in the area, and hotels not far away.
Edit. Web site has no mention of escorts anymore??

She had a lot of time at the wheel. Not enough cars for everyone so there were swaps after a time. New challenges introduced etc. Much of that though was on a pre prepared gravel track and not on the rally course proper. Only right I suppose as novices could not be expected to go around that.
Got a ride in a rally car cunningly disguised as a rocket ship at full tilt around bye course though driven by Phil, just wow.

I would say drive a configuration of car with which you are familiar, then you will be nearer the pace sooner and will enjoy it more.
I did one in front wheel drive, left hand drive, Proton rally cars, and it took me too long to get used to the car to get the hang of lift off over-steer.
My daily drive at the time was a rear wheel drive, 4 litre automatic Lexus, which i could power-slide all day long, so a RHD Escort would have suited me better.
The passenger ride in an Evo was fun, especially my driver's face when he lost the back end on a chicane.
I was watching him, not where the car was going, so was quite surprised when i looked to my left after we had stopped - my door was two inches from several rather large trees.
I smiled and congratulated him on his skill and no more was said.

Stick with an escort. being slow and sideways is far more fun than being fast and not.
Did a full day in escorts with bill gwynne many many years ago, was epic. About 6-8 punters taking turns in 2 cars on a gravel track laid out on an old airfield or something like that - you could spin off through the cones without killing anything, which is a bonus.

I can thoroughly recommend the Phil Price Rally school.
It is circa £300 and you use a RWD Impreza which has more than enough power to break traction continually on their circuit. Here is a rubbish video of me from a while back:

I would advise going in the winter months!
You spend 90% of your day on that "bowl" shown on the video. After a few goes I got the hang of it, so I didn't really feel I improved much as that is about as fast as you can get round there! That would be my only criticism.
But when out on the big stage in the car I found it mentally hard work to listen to the co driver calls and drive the car as they were inverted from normal Dirt Rally/Colin Mcrae games! On computer games the call 1 means 1st gear, on the course it is 10 degree. The problems came when he calls a 6!!!
I would 100% return and do it again for the same money. That says all you need to know in my book.

I recommend The Bill Gwynne school too. Did my rally licence there last year and will probably go back for some more instruction.Did a full day in escorts with bill gwynne many many years ago, was epic. It's not far from Silverstone, at Turweston airfield, so easy to get to for many people.

Thirded. The location isn't as interesting as a Welsh forest stage, but it's proper tuition rather than an "experience". You get a lot of driving time, much more than an equivalent track experience day. It's not far from Silverstone, at Turweston airfield, so easy to get to for many people.
I remember the briefing. "ok, you come down here, into the hairpin, down to first, handbrake turn and away." straight into it, no messing. But they take you through it in the car very well.

by the mrs for christmas. Recommendations? I'd like to try a whole day in an Escort - but happy to take on suggestions for better experiences.
So have you told your Mrs yet that you would like to spend an entire day, at her expense, in an escort? Gassing Station | Track Days | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
