Discussion
Hi, I'd appreciate some advice on a track day car (not really for road use), ideally from someone who has driven some of my short list. I was thinking of getting either a 968 club sport (M030 if I could find one), an E30 M3 or an exige.
I don't want anything that I couldn't drive a fair distance to a track so a caterham is out. I'd also like to have a cage or at least put one in.
I also want a reasonable level or reliability and to be able to get knocks repaired reasonably easily (had one already, hence the desire for a dedicated track day car)
Any other suggestions are welcome..
I don't really have a lot of track experience
Thanks

Both are in the track-club fleet (www.track-sense.com), you could join and try them for size!!
Plug over.
On a non commercial note it depends on how much you want to spend, £10k will get you a very nice E30 M3 whereas you wont get a RHD MO30 spec 968 for less than £16k and even that is pushing it now. If anyone wants to prove me wrong then I have cash waiting!!
I'd go with the E30 and I'd probably buy a cheap one for £5k with a good shell and do a bit of a rebuild to your ideal spec, you'll end up with something you know and trust for £10k
Stephen
Thanks
my current road cars are
Ferrari Dino
Lancia Delta Integrale
Audi S4
Porsche Carrera GT
The ones I enjoy most and are most comfortable throwing around are the Dino and the Integrale. I have taken the integrale on the track but the breaks disappear very quickly (4-5 laps) and the headroom is to low with a Helmet on.

I'd agree with the Caterham idea to be honest. Tow it to the track with the S4 and you'll have one of the fastest, most track honed cars available.
Obviously it all depends on your budget but for Exige money you could get yourself an R300 or squeeze a bit more and get an R400.
If you want to save a bit of money I'd go for the M3 or 968CS. They won't be much slower than the Exige but will be cheaper and, dare I say it, more fun!
Caterham, Caterham, Caterham, Caterham, Caterham, Caterham, Caterham, Caterham, Caterham......................you get the idea!

how about any of the cars you've already got!
seriously - there is a lot to be said for having a cheap car to thrash on the track, its much more fun if, ultimately, you can walk away from a wreck that ruins your day not your year. unfortunately i think you would find the cars you mention just too slow, but then much faster cars certainly wont help you learn. i kind of agree with the caterham idea, great to learn to drive on track well, bloody fast and well within your financial pain limits if you crash! (and you can drive them to the track ok - i ran one as an only car for 3 years - s4 would make good tow car too)
