I have around £5k to spend on a track day car that must also be a second car for the road. I already have some ideas but please give me yours!

What about a stripped out and tuned nutter Ford Capri? Coudl get a Lotus 7 kit car for that which would probably be a good laugh. Could make quite an exciting E30 BMW for that too. Quite like the idea of cars that look slower than they are

Unfortunately had to sell my V8 Westie so no other 7 type will equal that one! This car must have doors - the street sleeper image is loads of fun. see the MkII Golf in the classifieds with AGU 20v Turbo engine fitted...

Just like johnny says- on the 944 front you have the choice of all 944s ie
2.5 lux
2.7lux
944S
S2
Turbo

Trouble is purchace price can be cheap but to have a car in a spec to take track abuse without wilting & that will not be a slow & wallowy old boot on track can cost the purchace price several times over.

Also dont discount non m3 E30s like 325i & 318is

For FWD Mk1/2 Golfs do make for great fun & with a few mods can make suprisingly quick track hacks- some prefer 205 gtis with Mi16s in etc tho, 1.8T convs can indeed pump out the power but there are some awful conversions out there tho to be aware of.

2.016v convs in mk1/2s can be good for 200bhp area tho & can be made relitivly bullet proof too & Mk1 with that sort of power & proper suspension & brakes is a seriously rapid track hack.

Mk2 MR2, 5 grand should buy a really nice example. Get one that hasn't been played with & it should be very reliable. If you did wanna start messing with it then there's plenty of advice & tuning bits to be found on the net.

I was considering this option before I managed to get acceptable insurance cover for my CTR.

Five grand would just about buy Matt T16s mental 300 bhp Saab, which has all the necessary work done for serious track work (and more). That is, if he's still intent on selling it...

How about a S14 200SX around 95 or 96, and spend the balance on "Endless" brake pads, braided hoses, 5.1 fluid (forget silicone in this car)boost gauge, decat and exhaust and a mechanical spring loaded bleed valve.
Loads of well balanced sideways fun!.

4 should be enough to drop a pair of bike engines in the back...

Scare yourself silly!

I've got a TVR S2 or a Subaru Impreza Turbo (standard uk spec) one of which needs to go! both of which are ideal for track days. The Scoob is probably better for combined dayly use/track day combo.

If you like a sleeper image - and you can find one that hasn't disintegrated try for a fiat strada TC abarth 130....go fast - fall apart faster - look dire.. or, more sensibly a Mk1 Golf..

Edited to add: -

Audi Quattro
Volvo T5R
Sierra Cosworth

Sounds very interesting! Both these cars have already made my shortlist and it sounds like I have the same sort of dilemma as you as to which one is right for me. Looks like I'm not too far away from you either drop me an e-mail with details of your scoob and S2.

I'll be bunging a 944Turbo (with Mo30 suspension) in the classifieds in a little while, healthy 260bhp @dyno might be right up your street?

Mail me through my profile if of interest.

Rover 220 Tomcat. Engine can easily and reliably taken to over 350bhp and you can shed loads of weight. Gary Prebble beats everything round Castle Combe in his.

Also in the same series (this is a mad suggestion but could be fun) there is a Lancia Thema turbo with huge wheels on the front (looks odd!) It goes like stink too.
