40th birthday looming ,what to do for a good day ?

The missus want's to treat me to a day out driving a Ferrari (+ others maybe) , I think maybe a track or airfield venue would be best . but I want a decent session or two driving some tastey machinery . I always look for good value for money , but probably won't get another chance too soon . so need to feel satisfied and not dissapointed . Any recent experience would be greatly apreciated .

Yes I had considered it , but I think the potential costs could be prohibative ( Skint !!)

Hmm i've been know to do the odd stupid thing in my time but the thought of spanking & writing off say £130ks worth of Ferrari into the armco & it not being insured for track use & thus being liable to pay for the whole sum would scare me just a tad!
Anyway back to the track day experiences- I think someone on here a while back was saying good things about a ferrari experience at Thruxton being good fun & good value.
Thruxton is OK. But you'll be desperate for more laps.
Do you really want to drive a Ferrari? Are you actually that bothered? Or do you want to spend time having a seriously good hoon in something out of the ordinary?
The reason I ask is that, of necessity, the number of laps you will get in a piece of automotive exotica will be limited - you will also have an instructor next to you whose job is to preserve the car.
On the other hand you could rent a Caterham Superlight off Jonny at Bookatrack for a day. Talk to him nicely and he might even offer you a deal. But in any case you'll get a car for your exclusive use ALL DAY and a Track on which to use it. You'll get an instructor who wants you to go faster who will be with you for a twenty minute session and then as much track time as you can stand for the rest of the day practicing what you've learned.
Whilst this may not be suitable for the total novice you'll get a LOT of track time for your money in comparison.
I am unaffiliated with Bookatrack in any way and I cannot recommend them highly enough as a good value experience...but, like I say, you might want to take along a friend who's done some track days before with you if you haven't yourself - its not for the total beginner...

I knew this was going to get complicated , but yes you are probably right , a few laps may be more frustrating than none at all , and the thought of driving a Caterham all day is indeed a potential feast of fun , but that may spoil me for the day I finaly get my pride and joy road worthy (Formula 27) . I may never get the chance to drive a Ferrari again and I have been besotted with them since before I could string a sentance together (About 3 weeks ago ) It looks more and more as if this could be the last golden age for the glorious internal combustion engine , before we all have to knuckle down and resign ourselves to souless hydrogen/electric power . It took me untill I was 39 to get a ride in my first Fezza 308 after drueling over every curve as a schoolboy,
can I pass up this opertunity ?
I have found some "mixture" days with a few laps in a 308/355/360 as well as some other less exotic but still interesting motors

There is also the Top Cats TVR Tuscan day - they advertise on here, so you should be able to find them on the list of advertisers.
OK, you only get a quarter of a day (but as most track days are sessioned these days, that only compares to being able to run for a third of a day in your own car - so not that bad).
Charlotte will make you go faster and as for the car - well it certainly ticks the out of the ordinary box.

Totally agree with Don and Daydreamer. For VFM time on track, hire a car on a trackday. I've not seen anyone hiring a Ferrari though (probably for good reason!)
As regards the "race school" run days in Ferraris and other exotica, as well as having severely restricted track time, I suspect they'll almost certainly use a rev limit - meaning that you won't even experience the noise & acceleration of the car. If you really want to try a Ferrari I'm sure you'd get far better value for money and a bigger grin from hiring one on the road and hooning around in second gear at 8000rpm.

Another vote here for hiring the Caterham from Bookatrack. We use them regularly having sold our own Caterham a couple of years ago.
Hire one on a track day over a Caterham style track such as Anglesey and you will simply not get better a better deal for fun per mile per £.

Another vote here for the Tuscan day. I did it at Silverstone, in with an RMA track day, and it was fabbo. I've done the intro day at Brands racing school, the Prescott hillclimb day, a rallying day at Silverstone and I would say it was better than all of those. OK, it ain't cheap (£550+VAT) but I would say it was worth every penny. There's an article in August last year's Sprint complete with a picture and some words from yours truly.
