Dunlop Formula-R track tyres....where to buy?
Discussion
I'm interested in getting some Dunlop Formula-R SP Sport D01J tyres for track day use for my E30 M3 (225/45 ZR 16). Anyone know where to get them at reasonable money? Anyone have experience of them? Demon-Tweeks want £150 plus VAT a corner. Alternatively, is there a better road legal track day tyre, say by Yokohama? Or should I go with slicks? I thought that using slicks might cause mega strain on the suspension. The suspension is proper lowered and adjustable kit, the Munich Legends Trackmeister gear. Thanks.
I bought a set of slightly used / second hand slicks from silverline racing, 6 for £100!
Also bought a set of Yoko 539's.
Personally the slicks were impressive but the yoko's, whilst having a bit less grip were ultimately a bit more fun as car still moved about a bit on the track. With slicks cars just seem to drive through the bends, which is faster but perhaps a bit less fun.
Most common thing seems to be to go for the A32 / Ao48 compromise Yokohama tyres which close the gap, but are still road legal and can be left on if it drizzles.

I would also suggest contacting Dunlop direct, we get our tyres for the Ginetta Championship from them whilst at the circuits or through Ginetta Cars..
For a list of dates and the suchlike see the Pistonheads Motorsport calender - Anglesey on the 10th/11th, Silverstone on the 24th of August... alternatively take a look at my 'homepage' which has a calender on it.

I haven't used d01's, but I raced on D98's last season, and was mightily impressed with them. People I know who have used the D01 say that it's better still.
I've also raced on Yoko 032R's. Very good tyres, even in the pissing rain at Croft I still had some grip
The thing to worry about when using slicks on a road car is the strain that it'll put on your transmission. If you've got a lot of power going through a road tyre, it'll tend to spin, which limits the amount of torque going through the diff and gearbox. If you have additional grip from your slicks, the torque that the transmission has to handle is much greater.
Not a problem if you have a 2CV, or a car that doesn't have the power spin its wheels anyway, but put them onto something with a bit of grunt, and you may be asking for trouble.
