Really want to try a single seater, but which circuit or company offers the best event for the money?

Obviously want max time in the car, and want also to be able to push the car (preferably it's will be slicks and wings), and not be nannied.

Have looked at the Rockingham 'Single Seater Experience' which seems OK. Any of you guys been on this or heard good things?

Without question Silverstone if time (40 minutes driving) and relative freedom (no pace car after 20 minutes)is your goal. Rockingham on the Oval is an amazing but different experience and equally good but only 30 minutes long and always behind a pace car.

Rockingham do both an oval experience and one on the infield circuit in their Formula Renaults IIRC. Was considering the infield but wondered what it was like - 30 minutes not so hot though.

they don't use formula Renaults. They use formula Rock's their title not mine. Custome made cars with different bodywork to make them look like either indy cars or F1 cars dependant on which bodywork they have the most of at the time. They were going stop thier infield experiences as I was led to believe but that have changed again. But its definately 30 minutes long whatever one they run. Still a good experience either way.

If it doesn't absolutely positively have to be a single seater, consider a day in the Topcats Tuscan racer. It's got slicks and oodles of power, plus you get a full time instructor urging you to give it some welly. They don't just allow you to drive it hard they positively encourage it, while keeping a helping hand ready to stop you getting too far out of shape.

I race a single seater and you will find that most of these experiences will discourage or not allow you to use the full speed of the car via a pace car or maybe rev. limit as you could have a very nasty off. The tuscan thing seems a much better bet as it will have much more power than the single seaters and you have someone onboard to save you from a wallet crunching off!! If you really need to do a single seater then there are test sesions in the formula palmer car which is very fast, not sure if you need a race license though and it is expensive £700 odd for two hours.

By far the best pure single seater experience you can get is the Formula Palmer Audi @ JP's Bedford Experience.

Might cost a bit more but without doubt the best there is shy of an F1 right now.

TVRFOREVER, if you'd lke to learn a bit more about the Tuscan experience that we offer drop me a mail via my profile or take a look at the website: www.topcatsracing.com

Everyone that we've had come and do the day has been thrilled with what they done. You'd be in a 450BHP 850KG race spec TVR Tuscan (0-60 3.3 seconds etc) running on slicks (weather permitting of course!) There is no rev limit and as GreenV8S has already said you are activley encouraged to push the car, you'd get 4 x 20mins sessions + the option of fast lap rides at the end of the day.

On the single seater front i've done the Brands Hatch day in the FPA's and all i can is DON"T DO IT !!!! the cars are limited to 4k RPM and you get next to no track time. I walked out of the day part way through in total disgust.

All the best
Darren (TopCats Racing)

TVRForever -
I can only see the Bedford Formula Audi cars as part of coporate days. Is it possible to be in a party of one or two?

Topcats -
Sounds great. How much?

The best Single Seater Experience that offers 5 -6 hours at the track, the chance to drive not just 1 but 2 single seaters and driving them around Mallory Park is this one www.trackday-gift-experiences.com/single-seater-mallory-park.htm

Urm, Not sure about that one.

5 hours at the track, of which it looks like 10 laps in a single seater. Looks like poor value to me.

I've done both Silverstone and Brands and will not be going again - rev limits - silly rules and no real encouragement to drive better / smoother / quicker.

Was very pleased with the 15 laps that the Jonathan Palmer day gave me in a detuned Formula Palmer on the multi car day. In fact very pleased with the whole experience.

I found Thruxton superb. I did the Ferrari 360 day which was superb and involved suingle seaters as well. There is a rev limiter in the single seaters but that only impeeds a little bit of progress down the back straight (think it cuts in at roughly 110mph). Absolutely loved them.

But you can go for a cheaper option at the track, i.e. not using Ferraris, and as you have had all the safety briefings and already driven the cars you can just buy more laps in the single seater while you are there. Think the ad ons were about £50 for 6 laps.

www.thruxtonracing.co.uk/ and check out the late availability special offers!

The day costs £550 + VAT for that you'll get an installation lap or two with an instructor then it'll be straight out for the first of your 4/5 20min sessions. You'll be encouraged to push the car as your skills increase, general rule of thumb listen to the instructor and forget that you'll played Formula 1 2004 on your playstation and by your second session you'll be flying, no rev limit no speed limit just very good and helpful instruction so you get the best out of the day. Lunch, tea, coffee etc. is all inc.
Drop me a mail or call me (number on the Topcatsracing.com web site)
Cheers
Darren

Agree with all the comments re 'experience days' as the 4 or 5 I've done have all had limiters and been very tame.

Far from a Palmer day @ Bedford - simply the best car day around (done 9 now with 10th booked).

Darren - as we're local (Watermead) and you guys service our Chimaera I've been meaning to book a session for a couple of years. And agree that Charlotte & Warren (hope their day went well and they're not too 'blissful') run a superb outfit. (Un)Fortunately 'baby bump' is due in Feb '05 and hence car finances are having to be restricted in order to fund baby equipment. Maybe later in '05?

Another vote for the TopCats Tuscan day here. Absolutely brilliant, and no nonsense about rev limits (other than preventing expensive explosions under the bonnet). You get treated just like a "real" racing driver by the pit crew and the instructors are excellent - constantly urging you on within safety limits. The cars are real race cars, too, duct tape and all. And the sensation of hauling in a GT3 on the straights has to be felt to be believed.

Hmmm, I feel a repeat visit coming on. Yes, it's a lot of money, but worth every single penny, IMNHO.

But of course you'd be welcome any time in 05. and when you change up to the Cerbera (i'm assuming that Cerbera comes under the title of baby equipment??!!) to accomdate Jnr bring it in and we'll have a look over her for you over a tea/coffee. Hope all goes well for you and 'baby bump'

All the best Darren

Twenty minutes is a long time to keep that level of concentration, and I know I wouldn't have had the guts to push it half as hard without the encouragement.
