As a Nordschleife regular you will know that taking footage of laps of not allowed.

I have seen several cars with very small remote video lenses that presumably plug into a normal DV camera.

Does anyone know where I can get hold of this type of gadget?

Cheers

Obviously you wouldn't be wanting to use this at the Ring though

Remember that disseminated video of n'ring crashes or illegal/dangerous riding /driving is ammunition for those who may want to close it.

If any illegal footage does get taken, please do not allow it to be posted anywhere etc.

It should also be noted that people who video their laps tend to treat traffic differently and are more inclined to showboat at Brunnchen/Plflanzgarten - this isn't always good driving practice Please be careful - as much as for others as yourself - if you do attach a bullet cam.

I was out at the Ring last month and our crew had a filming permit. We also had a number of cars with us, so the cameras were being moved from car to car and nobody had informed the guys on the gate. That said, no matter where we sited the bulletcam, one of the guys spotted it every time and made sure our papers were in order.

Some of the places we had the cam were pretty sly - such as barely protruding down near the front towing eye - and the guy spotted it every time. If you are thinking of sneaking a cam through, watch out for Dead Eye Dick on the barrier!

Thats my interpretation of the video ban also, and to keep such footage out of the courtroom should 2 vehicles be involved in a crash.

On the other hand, if no dodgy driving goes on, or shunts captured, I have no qualms about sharing Ring Videos

Returned from a couple of days at the 'Ring last Wednesday. There was no restriction on filming at all although these were not public days.

You'll find this site

interesting - do you have any videos online for a sample?
How is the sound from the remote mic?
What kind of camcorder are you using?

I rigged up my small, but heavy Canon ZR60 to the side of a cheap helmet. Made great vids at the kart track, but my neck was REALLY sore the next day!

Hi Kurt,

I haven't got any footage online I'm affraid but quality is very good with the Hi Res bullet cam and totally acceptable too with the lower res version.

I use a Sony PC100 which is old and heavy compared to modern stuff but it does the job very well then I archieve everything on DVD.

As for sound, the provided mic is mono so I use a y shape splitter to connect it to both L and R signal in the camcorer to get facked stereo rather then the uneven stereo you get otherwise. I also usually leave the mic in the back area of the car to get on board sound and still get road noise as well as exhaust sound. Didn't try to leave it outside but I guess that will cause a lot of wind noise!

I hope this helps.

Hi

Caterham have just launched their own RaceCam - looks pretty good from what I can see - not sure how it compares on price - but it's broadcast quality !

RF Concept is OK if you are only going to occasionally use it. It isn't really designed for hard-core use and will not hold up long term (lots of personal experience). That is what you get with all off-the-shelf security products being sold as "action cameras."

If you want to do more then check out

www.XtremeRecall.com .

They design for Pro Racers and Broadcasters and make the most flexible vehicle mount. Their In-car video systems are also easily convertible to full Helmet Cam systems - or vice versa.

Personally, I'd spend a little more and get a higher quality system that is actually designed for the job and can do double duty on a Mountain Bike or Snowboard. Best thing is they really aren't all that much more expensive.

Cheers.

remember for most bullet cams you will need an 'analogue in' camcorder - most modern ones dont have this anymore

Although Most cams I've seen (at least the Sony ones) still have a S-Video in on a micro connector which will take analogue quite happily or a single multi pole jack that does A/V in and out.

e.g.

You can see the A/V In/Out covered by the rubber connector on the right hand side.

From the "PH'er at the Ring" thread (www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=138332&f=18&h=0) looks like this person wasn't that worried about it...

You would be suprised at the number of people filming in the pictures I have taken, it's probably 1 in 5 cars using a hand-held. One person I know made up a bracket and attached a cam-corder to the rear headrest. They never spotted it at the gate!
