Myself and a mate are looking to get a track car between us next Spring. Car budget of about 7-10k. We're pretty handy with spanners but it needs to be basic so we can do most of the work ourselves. Locost/Caterfield springs to mind but we fancied something a bit 'different'- possibly a classic of some kind? Doesnt have to be road leagal but it would be a bonus. Although he's a bike mechanic we dont really want anything with a bike engine as this is supposed to be fun not work! Anyone got any suggestions?

For upto 10k you have quite a wide choice, you have the Fury and Pheonix which are full bodied cars, ide go for a Locost, then again i am biased
Best look through some of the posts in the Kitcar section for ideas

Why don't you just buy a cheap ff1600 and race it? Boring going round on your own after a bit, and waiting for slow muppets is a pain as well. (Well it's a pain when you are racing I suppose )

FF is a nice idea, and relatively cheap. But the problem with a single seater is that I cant take instructors out with me.

Take one second hand, good condition VTEC engine (ideally 1.8l or above, the Civic-R's K20 would be good). Buy one second hand Caterfield (or maybe a Cat-C Elise???. Even better if it's got a dead engine.
Fit engine A into car B...

Alternatively, if you prefer turbo'd torque to revs, get a VAG 1.8T.

There are plenty of both types of engine around if you look, so prices should be reasonable!

Alternatively, if you don't want the hassle, buy an Integra-R. Out of the box, it's a very capable car - really adjustable on track, and while not the quickest you could get, it'll keep up with lower-output Elise's and Caterfields, and you can drive it there and back with passenger, jerrycan, toolbox and spare set of track wheels...

Hi Jamie

I’ve been thinking along similar lines and keep swaying between a new/different car or just budgeting a similar amount on the TVR and using that. You also get the advantage of driving a Griffith rather than something far less exciting.

I’m slowly coming round to the idea of driving my pride and joy like I stole it for the next few years and then (when I’ve got it out of my system - does that sound realistic ) respray it, rebuild the engine if necessary and put the original seats back etc. The cost may be less than buying another car (that is until you stuff it trying too hard on a hillclimb )

Let me know what you decide to do.

Elises now available at 10K with 40K miles on.

Take a look at Autotrader. Dogs available at the same money as Minters by the look of it so buyer beware...

Chap i spoke to at a trackday had done the following:

bought an impreza for £6k
tuned the engine to about 300bhp
stripped it
stuck in a half cage, some seats and harnesses
uprated suspension
uprated brakes
was running it on slicks (apparently with no ill effects to engine??)

He reckoned total cost was about 11k, but I am sure you could do it for less, if you sacrificed some of the upgrades.

oh yeah, the car was rapid.

Add Promax level 3 www.promaxmotorsport.com

Add a boost guage and some Air/fuel monitoring.

Hmmmm, nice ideas, still a porsche though - no offence intended but I just fancied something a bit more 'unusual'.

We're considering a Ginetta quite seriously. Dunno which one though, we like em all.
