Colway tyre experiences anyone?
Discussion
Anyone used either of these on track?
Intermediate-
"Tarmac rally soft compound intermediate Michelin TB pattern.
Suitable for damp and wet conditions can be cut more open for very wet stages.
Good tyre for road rallies comes with formula compound"
Formula 2-
"Tarmac rally moulded slick with FIA 17 % tread pattern legal for road sections on rallies.
Can be cut to an intermediate pattern comes with formula compound and is reinforced"

Circuit Driver did a comparative review of Track Day tyres recently. The "control" road tyre was the Michelin Pilot Sport - which they compared against the track day specials.
All tyres wre fitted to a 968 IIRC and driven by the same guy.
It was no surprise that the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres trounced all the others in lap times.
The Colway tyres were rubbish. In fact worse than the "control" road tyres!
So whilst I have no personal experience...that review did them no favours.
Shame - I like the idea of "green" tyres that are inexpensive so I can trash them with impunity...but not if they are going to fail to grip the damn road...

Blimey Don thats not a great recomendation- pushing me further down the route of slicks
I'll try & grab a read of that article, but in the meantime do you know which colway they used?
ps speaking of track abuse, shouldnt you be at Goodwood today?
Naaah. That's Wednesday. Woohoo! The BBC are even predicting sunny weather...
I'll look up me old circuit drivers and see if I've still got a copy of the article. To be fair - I believe they were puzzled as to why the Colway was so bad - it shouldn't have been.
But - lets say the Colways have you slip-slip-sliding about and you trash them. You can still have all the fun of getting the fastest laps out of them you can and they cost loads less...unless you are trying to "win" and on a track day be definition you aren't what's the problem?
Just another way of looking at it.
Me? I'm seriously thinking of a nice set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cups for next year...but it means a second set of wheels (ouch) as you really *shouldn't* use them in the wet...
Actually Don dont think they do either of those two Colways in anything near your size anyway- 205/15 the biggest in F2 or intermediate.
Spoke to Colway motorsport just now, F2 would be the one to go for me, road legal but cack in the wet- unsuprising looking at the pic I guess!
Yeah im not looking for 'em to be all slidey- I can get that from road rubber & in my sizes its not that pricy- but tried to keep up with a Golf on ACB10s at Brands GP, it felt like I was on ice while it looked like he was on rails
Then again I can almost get 3 sets of the F2's for the price of 1 set of Yoko AO48R or Dunlop R's so I would give them some allowance for not being quite that good & grippy but then they are slicks with grooves in- so how bad can they be?
On the Mich cups- the word on the street or should that be track is that the Dunlop R's are a better track tyre- perhaps have a chinwag with clubsport about this.
2nd set of wheels obviously a good idea, wont cost you much- I sold a clean set of Box 17's for about £400, so you should get a tatty set ideal for track use for next to nothing. Thing is tho you can't bung your road tyres in the boot in case it buckets down, full up with just those curling tongs so you need to collar a friendly lizard with a big boot to take them to the track for you if we are going to the same day
Got to get something tho Don for your track tyres for the combined PH reprobates Spa & 'Ring extraviganza that we really must all do in '05..... Spare pennies going in the piggy bank right now

A friend with a 205 track car was recommended Colways, tried a set of Formula 2's, and was very unimpressed:-
On one of the fronts the tyre itself was starting to separate at the shoulder.
For "slicks" they took a lot of warming up, and weren't especially consistent.
He actually felt like he was travelling slower than when he was running road-legal Yoko's.
Hope this helps.

Seen this months Porsche 911 World?
Has an article on Lodge Sports 924s race/track cars and they use Colways IIRC (read it in Smiths)
Not read that one yet, but yeah they run the intermediate tyre, its the 924'ers running 'em that got me thinking about running them.
Must admit after the not exactly glowing feedback Im leaning away from the Colway idea now tho.
