Toyo Proxes T1-R

New rubber from Toyo promises better grip in wet and dry

Toyo are upping their game with the release of the new Proxes T1-R tyre. It's evolved from the popular Proxes T1-S which is recognised as one of the best gripping tyres in wet conditions. Whilst the wet performance has improved again, Toyo’s own tests show dry grip is now 25% better whilst both tyre life and noise have improved by over 10%.

Tested extensively in Europe and particularly in the UK, the Proxes T1-R has a new European spec compound, new casing construction and a new tread pattern. These elements combine to produce a cooler running tyre with improved grip, tyre life, ride comfort, and lower noise generation.

The T1-R comes in 87 different sizes - one of the most comprehensive high performance ranges available from any tyre manufacturer. The range spans from 14” to 20” wheels and from 55 series down to 30 series ultra low profile sizes.

I'll likely be getting some of these this month - I wonder what they're like on snow though? T1-S were terrible on snow (not that 1-3 days a yr is a big problem, but in a scoob, you want to go well in the snow, don't you!?)

"My ultra high performance summer tires suck in the snow".

Sure, and I can't fit a three grand (eh, Wedg1e?) widescreen telly in the back of my MINI. Where do I submit my complaint?

Snow was a problem, you'd get stuck in like 5mm But like you say, the odd day to a week in the UK thats all.

Hope these tyres live up to the last in terms of lower cost though... I think thats the main reason they are so good. Similar performance tyres usually cost twice as much for my size, but last 50% longer.
It's a trade off that works well, I hope they don't cost over 10% more, otherwise they start getting into p zero territory for the same tyre life

Hmmmm

25% more grip in the dry? That's a massive change. Either the old ones were totally cr@p, or these ones must be exceptionally good.

Have already tested them at the press launch, against Dunlop SP9000 and Goodyear F1 GSD-3. Cars were Golf V 2.0 TDI (140 bhp) and BMW 320d.

25% Better in the dry handling stakes seemed like a bold claim indeed (the T1-S were certainly no slouch in that department) and it's hard, if not impossible to draw conclusions from comparisons under such 'controlled' circumstances (what about tyre pressures, have Toyo 'cherry picked' the cars that best matched their tyre and shod the 'best' examples with their product, et cetera) - but what I can say is that the T1R is definitely a contender for 'best UHP road tyre' at the moment. A very consistent high score in dry and wet handling, I would say, and they seemed to stand up to the rigours of extended track testing quite well.

I appreciate the irony of my comment above - it would just be nice if I could have some fun in the snow (if it ever happens again) WITHOUT shelling out on winter tyres.

It seems daft to be outpaced by an old Fiesta whilst creeping carefully along in a supposed (ahem) "rally rep".

Such is life, though - and if that's the only penalty for such good tyres, I guess I'm more than happy to pay it...

I loved the T1-S tyres I had. If they can improve on that, i'll buy a set to sleep with!

(My opinion is partly formed by my current tyres....Yoko's...arrghhhhhhsmash!)

But as a 'rally rep' then you should also know that the proper rally cars don't stick to one type of tyre either.

If you don't want to be embarrased by 'lesser' cars in the snow then go for a good all season tyre rather than a performance tyre - but then you'll not have as much grip in the dry - you makes your choice...

Hehehe, I wouldn't go on a Toyo tyre testing day for how good the new ones are.

I think it was last year, the Autocar or maybe Evo tyre test. When the Toyo's provided and the Toyo's used were of such different performance, the testers assumed the worst, and ignored the data for the Toyo's.
Ie, Toyo supplied special tyres, which were found to be better by a large margin than those that were off the shelf bought privately.

I'd buy a set and run them and make your own choice. It's the only way with tyres really!

Are they much more than the T1-S?

if this is referring to the Toyo proxie R888...

they are brilliant! got a set on my Griff and they stormed round Le Mans and Dijon a week or so ago and managed 8-10 hot laps before going off...a touch.

35 degree heat and only a mild scrubbing understeer on the limit after 25 track miles. great.

my proxies TS1's would have only lasted 2 laps or so and had WAY less grip. +25% is about right for R888.

buy some!

Er no, the R888 is part of the Trampio semi-race tyre family, and the Proxes T1-R is the successor to the T1-S.

sorry

so this is a slick then? or just the new road tyre?

should have read the article really, with 25% more grip stated i guessed it was the road slick.

To echo G's comments, I have just bought some TOYO R888 trackday tyres for my Porsche 968. They are road legal as well.

Grip about 75% of the way from normal road tyres to slicks. In a shower whilst on a trackday, the performance was good -- no sense of letting go too early.

Side walls much stiffer than standard road going TOYO's, so they are less prone to scrubbing off the shoulders. Ride is appreciably harder.

In conclusion -- for anyone who wants to track their car and protect their normal road tyres R888 are a cheap and effective way to go.
